Nice, I just found out that that the TIOBE index is created by a company in the Netherlands. I'm trying to figure out how their chart puts Visual Basic .NET at fifth place. [Stack Overflow puts it in 12th place.](https://insights.stackoverflow.com/trends?tags=java%2Cc%2Cc%2B%2B%2Cpython%2Cc%23%2Cvb.net%2Cjavascript%2Cassembly%2Cphp%2Cperl%2Cruby%2Cvb%2Cswift%2Cr%2Cobjective-c&utm\_source=so-owned&utm\_medium=blog&utm\_campaign=gen-blog&utm\_content=blog-link&utm\_term=incredible-growth-python) [GitHub puts it much lower](https://madnight.github.io/githut/#/pushes/2018/2) depending on if you look at PUSH/PULL requests. I am actually wondering if this is an artifact created by the search term "Visual Basic .NET programming" which is the only four-word search term. What I find even more interesting is that @Dave-Kreskowiak [posted the number of 'results found'](https://www.codeproject.com/Lounge.aspx?msg=5539493#xx5539493xx) and when I use the same search terms I am getting different numbers compared to what he posted. Here are mine:

    +"C# programming" 1,330,000 results
    +"VB.NET programming" 234,000 results
    +"C#" 95,600,000 results
    +"VB.NET" 194,000,000 results

I think this may be happening because of the [Google Personalized Search](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google\_Personalized\_Search) which is basically a [Filter Bubble](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filter\_bubble). So this causes me to question the entire TIOBE index and the [methodology they have used](https://www.tiobe.com/tiobe-index/programming-languages-definition/). Best Wishes, -David Delaune

You're mixing terms, javascript is the most popular language in the world most popular means liked by more people than any other, nothing to do with documents. And BTW I doubt that is actually true, while I am sure breathing is the most popular pass time in the world.

The problem is not if it is honest or not... I think the correct word is "accurate"

No, it mean liked by more people who answered the survey. Which means nothing since most people don't give a damn about surveys; unless they are on CodeProject.

Marijuana is still the most popular drug around the world...doesn't mean it is a good thing.

You'd rather have heroine to be the most popular? Anyway, coffee is a drug and it's the most popular by far, way more popular than marijuana. With alcohol probably being a good second, and a way more harmful drug than marijana :sigh:

No, that is beer. And in the US, it would be closely followed by (prescription) opiates. Doesn't mean that is a bad thing either :)

Not the most popular, but the most used. As was VB6 once upon a time.

Well, I do enjoy it when the heroine wins the day. But if the heroine is found using heroin, then that's sad. ;)

Googling for "how many software developers in the world" brings back some article placing that value at 18.2M. Now consider CP has 13.6M, and that we're mostly Windows developers. And consider the most common language(s) discussed here. The conclusion I draw from this is to question all numbers people pull out of their asses.
