Rarely. The best PR usually wins; that's how democracy and capitalism both work; on perception, not actual merits. People come here and ask which software is "best" for their problem; they want opinions, they don't like to make a list with advantages and disadvantages to judge it.

No way. When I installed Linux I had to find crazy command lines just to get network drivers to work. Then other command lines to enable basic OS features. You're telling me that regular home and office users want to deal with that? No way.

I did it for different reasons. Money wasn't the root issue, but it is admittedly a secondary or tertiary factor. When Win7 goes tits-up next year, my only alternative is to go Win10 or Linux. I refuse to infect my machine with Win10, so Linux got the nod. It hasn't been all roses, but for thwe most part, I have no issues. I still run a Win7 VM for as long as Visual Studio will run on it. Downside - I can't run any SQL server newer than 2014 because 20116 and up will not run on Win7. However, there's a version of SQL server for Linux, so it's all good.

I had to install some additional software on top of ubuntu but it wasn't an oppressive task. The reason the commandline is so pervasive on KLinux is the because of the number of possible GUIs taht are available. It's difficult to write a GUI tool that supports all the available desktop platforms, and commandline always works. Linux's flexibility is its biggest downfall.

True. But all someone had to do within the last 20 years was make a linux that worked out of the box and named their utilities with names that make sense and then promote it. It seems like they could have easily overtaken Microsoft.

When you have this many people working on it independently, who do you think is in a position to enforce what you're suggesting? There isn't one company "in charge" of Linux. One could claim it could all go through Linus Torvalds, but he only does the kernel, and it sounds like it's already a full-time job.

I know. Hence Microsoft is still beating them.

Don't kid yourself, Microsoft is "still beating them" only because that's all the mainstream knows and will settle for. It's called the tyranny of the default. And I'm saying this as someone who's only had a passing interest in Linux over the last few years, and otherwise has been earning a living as a Windows developer for decades.

But that's my point. If Linux were better than Microsoft, it seems like it would be pretty easy to have let someone know by now.

Yet another Linux distro? Wouldn't that just exacerbate the problem?

"Better" is a subjective term. 0) Windows costs more than Linux. 1) Both have the same hardware requirements given a similar list of desired functionality 2) One of the biggest "claims to fame" is that Linux will run on really old and minimal hardware. That's true, but see item 1. 3) If all you ant is commandline, Linux is a cheaper, lighter and faster alternative (compared to Windows Server 2016). In both instances, you can choose to go GUI. 4) Both Linux and Windows are going to deprecate 32-bit support in the near future, so taht kinda blows the "really old hardware" benefit out of the water. 5) Windows is "better" because you're used to it. 6) Linux is "better" because it's free as well as infinitely configurable, and most software a home user would need is also free. 7) I'm boycotting item 7, because it's part of "Win7". 8) Windows is "better" because most apps look the same in terms of control placement and menu content. Linux really sucks in this regard, howeer, most apps available on Linux that are also available on Windows look very similar (FireFox, and Thunderbird for instance). 9) As a windows developer, I understand the reasons for sticking with Windows, but I'm nearing retirement age, and don't see the value anymore. I'll run my Win7 instance in a VM, and only use it when I'm developing for Windows at home. The rest of the time, I'll be using my boot OS - Linux.

Well, Microslop has come out with WSL, which I hear is rather decent, if you like the commandline.

There's Zorin OS. It's a Linux distro with the Windows look and feel.

Mark TwainIt's not a cellphone, so it's reasonably likely that you don't need a lock screen to prevent things activating when you put it in your pocket. To get rid of it:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Personalization\
(You might have to create the Personalization key)* Add a new DWORD(32-bit) - Name it NoLockScreen
- Give it a value of 1
Then it goes straight to the log-in screen

Not 100% up to date, but it did give me some useful info. Unfortunately to get access to the slider that disables the ads, I apparently have to completely disable Windows Spotlight, which then means that I can't get the pretty pictures either. :sigh: Rock and a hard place... X|

Ya, tried that one. Lots of problems with it. Including often losing the desktop upon logging in. Just logged in to a blank screen. Command line was the only way to fix it.

But it appears like there is also one or more registry solutions: https://appuals.com/turn-off-ads-links-lock-screen-windows-10/[^] I'll try one of those...
