They don’t “dump” her. They give her a pen & tell her that they are splitting ways...

When they do staff pruning, they do it by putting a circular on the table, and they don't fret about it; just give them the chop. They let the assistant take a final bow, though. Sometimes the staff reciprocate; many ex-magicians take the plunge and join a band instead, though sometimes the magicians have them back. If they're coping well and not cross about it, they might do a little jig, though this can hack off their ex-employer. I bet you saw this coming though.
