Well it has finally happened. I am going to be forced to go to .NET or something like it. One of our biggest customers wants us to write a pretty signifigant piece of software that requires a bunch of stuff that no one in our little firm has had to deal with. They want an application for writing a specialized form of insurance that the agents can go to a website , log on , and use. My total internet expertise to date in in writing CGI code ( in C++ ) and , of course, the HTML form to use the cgi/bin apps. That ain't gonna do the trick here as I am going to have to have multiple forms and forms that are data dependant based on previous information. Plus plain old HTML is so cludgy looking and a nightmare to maintain. So what technologies and books do I need to immerse myself in for the next 6-8 weeks ? Or do I need to try to hire someone with the proper experience for the job and if so - what am I LOOKING FOR. Telling the customer that we can't do it is out of the question. They spend upward of 300,000 a year with us now and that is increasing . HELP Richard In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love; they had five hundred years of democracy and peace and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock. Orson Welles

Inside C# (2nd Edition) - Tom Archer ASP.NET Step by Step - Microsoft I read inside c# first, and that taught me about the syntax of the language, etc etc. ASP.NET step by step explains web forms etc, and how to setup a server.

I never opened a beginners book for C# but I have a fairly long C++/Java history behind so C# was fun and very very easy... But I still think that it would be good for someone who's going to go straight into ASP.NET development with C# to get a very solid understanding of the C# fundamentals... especially if they are not 100% comfortable with OO in C++. Come to think of it... I ordered a C#/.NET book about a month ago on... still hasn't arrived. Regards, Brian Dela :-)

Been programming since the late 60's. ASM - fortran - cobol - pascal - ada - C - C++. I started C++ using C Terp from Bell labs. If you are not familiar with that old doggie it took C++ syntax and turned out C code to feed to cc. Ah - those were the days. I never bothered learning any of the net stuff with the exception of CGI because until now I really had no need to and to me it seemed a bit of a backwards step to move from C++ to VB or C#. However time and circumstances change all the best laid plans.
