I'm getting my wife a PocketPC - yep she's a geek and actually wants one :) - Any suggestions on both brand and exact model? I'm looking for something that runs the .NET Compact Framework. Cheers, Tom Archer, Inside C# Mainstream is just a word for the way things always have been -- just a middle-of-the-road, tow-the-line thing; a front for the Man serving up the same warmed-over slop he did yesterday and expecting you to say, "Thank you sir, may I have another?"
I've got the HP iPAQ h5450 which is the UK version, the us version ends in 5 I think. Its a seriously slick piece of kit, and even has the bio-metric finger scanner to stop unwanted people getting in, without the need to remember a password. On the cheaper side is the new baby version 1910, which does not have the 802.11B and Bluetooth like the other. Its still very very nice though, and came out shortly after I got mine. Having played with one in a shop, its a close run things as this one is just so light.

I recommed the Dell Axims. I have the 300mhz version and have the .NET CF installed on it. If I was you I would wait until the 23rd, I think, when PocketPC 2003 is released and see what Gateway is going to offer the market. I think it will probably be very competitive with the Axim in features and price. One other note about the Dells, Dell is coupon crazy and always has some type of coupon or discount. Check http://www.bensbargains.net for Dell coupons and you can get the Axims for cheap. I got mine brand new from Dell for like $170 shipped. Take care, Joshua Guy Joshua Guy

I can't recommend a model but I would definately go for something along the lines of the HP iPaq's. The latest model (H5450), I think has fingerprint scanning, 802.11 and bluetooth compatibility. Plus there are loads of accessories available. I have a Toshiba e570 and I can't find a portable keyboard for it anywhere! :mad: Hope this helps. Live to ride. Ride to live.

I finally broke down and got a PGD (Portable Geek Device) to have my calander with me when radio stations call to book interviews. I went with the Dell Axim as well. Not really sure if it's running .net or not, but since it's fairly latest and greatest I'd be surprised if it was otherwise. I also ordered a 1 gig storage card with it. Saved me the expense of buying yet another gizmo to use as a portable mp3 player for plane trips, etc. I started playing music non stop (on batteries) when I got in to work to test it, and let it run all day. Battery drain was only about 25% in 8 hours. So far, I've been pretty happy with it, but be advised that Dell has several prices for the same product - the 800 number price, the web site price, any special pricing you hear about, etc. If you buy direct, don't assume that all purchasing methods will yield the same price. I have a Dell Axim X5, the one with a 400MHz processor. It's a nice Pocket PC, I really like it. And it can run the Compact .NET Framework. I also have 4 HP Jornada in various models, and one of them with a 8" display and keyboard (an Jornada 820). The Dell is the newest, but also the one with the best screen. The only downside to the Dell, and why so many magazines rates it poorly, is the supplied software, there's next to nothing. But it's okay, there is plenty out on the 'net ;) - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!"

I have a Toshiba e310, which is the lowest end on the Toshiba spectrum (200MHz, SD-only expansion, no wireless, 32RAM). If you have the money and want "Da Good Stuff", I'd get the e740 (400MHz, 64RAM, CF and SD expansions and built-in 802.11b).
