Mediocre acting, elves that don't look elvish, constant epic emotional music, overdone and mediocre CGI, absurd dialog with random pithy clichés, meandering aimless plot lines, stupid love plot hints, and generally stupid behavior by children to move the death and destruction plot line along.

Yeah. It's unfortunate, "they" could have done much better - the script is like something I'd expect from junior high school students. :( Actually, worse.

His son Christopher probably moreso, as I understand it. He was very much against selling the rights to LotR and the Hobbit for the movies (having made a career out or riding his father's coattails, and never having an original idea for himself), but his grandson had no problem taking the money. I don't think a TV series would've happened with Christopher still in charge of the estate.
