we could create a larger virtual company :) lots of independent .net developers - single man companies co-oping under the same virtual company name. if someone finds a project that is to large for one person , he can share it with/sell it to the rest of the group in order to get the job done. wouldnt that be nice :) //Roger

Good idea! :) If a CPian ever does that, I'm in. ;) I'm looking for some mid-sized programming projects myself.

Hello, After being out of work now for 7 months. I've decided to go solo.. The only problem is that I have no idea on how to get projects. I've tried rentacoder.com but there just seems to be to many coders and to little projects.. Can anyone help me out on how to get projects??

As with most things in business, it's about knowing the right people. I've been working as a "solo coder" for the last 30 months and have been very lucky. My first gig came via a friend who does IT support. He got a job working for a call centre and when they needed a CTI coder he recommended me. He also got me another job working for another call-centre. From there, I've made contacts with other consultants working for the two companies. This has got me other work. Getting that first gig can be very difficult if you don't have the contacts. The best thing to do is ask around, friends, family, ex-work mates etc. Make some more contacts in the business, go to trade shows. You could even advertise development services in the local paper; you never know who might be looking for a small custom database app. Michael 'War is at best barbarism...Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation. War is hell.' - General William Sherman, 1879

I wouldsay that networking (in the people sense !) is very important, bulding up contacts within a section of the business community when you do get somework. Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D

Where do you live in Canada? My employer is looking for .NET coders. I have interviewed 6 so far, and few fulfill the requirements. We're in the Ottawa region.

Would you pay to relocate me and my family from the UK? Derek Lakin. Try the Code Store for instant integrated access to an online repository of .NET components. I wish I was what I thought I was when I wished I was what I am. Salamander Software Ltd.

Roger J wrote: we could create a larger virtual company Oh no, CP Coders Group? ;) Actually, I think there would be a lot of business in that area if there were a few people pulled in doing sales! Out here in Oregon the unemployment rates is over 8% (supposed to be the highest in the nation for a State). A recent survey of tech companies in the Portland area said the one out of five are planning to outsource their work to other countries and three out of five are investigating doing the same. That leaves one out of five that plans to keep hiring locally. Usually though, in these situations, they are looking for low contract prices which most people here in the United States will not accept for wage. Don't have a clue how you can contract and still make a living here, but it is a win for other countries that wish to work for almost nothing. Rocky Moore <><

Strange, that is the same about of time I have been without work. I have only been watching the job sites though since there are no jobs in my local area (small city in southern Oregon). I still in progress on a couple projects from past employment and project that will only make money once finished and they happen to sell some of them to a limited market. Oh well.. There are some sites that I cannot remember at the moment which you can join to get health care benifits and they handle all the billing and marketing you are some large percentage. You might do a search for those if that interests you. For me, I am a coder, designer and consultant, not a sales person. My marketing abilty is right there below zero :) Something that may be stupid, but I have been thinking of lately, is running a few ads in the surounding cities help wanted or business opportunities for people who want to make money. When they contact me I inform them of my services and see if they would be interested in pimpping me to their local area businesses with a 20% referral fee (I figure I would spend at least that in advertising my services). Once I find the most energized person, I will give them that area and if I receive any contracts from that area, I would pay them the referral. It should at least get my name in front of people that matter and open a door to come in and show them my skill. Rocky Moore <><
