So, I know many of you know about my eye-rolling rants from these two companies and their BS code. Preface - I'm in the middle of upgrading MS Teams from the free one being retired to the free one that is now available. Yeah, I'm not making this up. We'll get to that in a moment. So, HP printers. 10 years ago or pay the big bucks, you're okay. Small home office you're screwed, etc. Not going to beat a dead horse. In the past 3 months, I've given my HP laser away (daughter could not make it work - I told her to toss it in the trash), bought a brother laser that sit's in the corner and works, tossed in the trash an HP inkjet that it was that way or the wife was looking for a shotgun. Happy with the new non-HP inkjet. So I'm trying to figure out if MS screwed the install for the new Teams (they desperately want me to pay $50/year so they are making it hard), and in add/remove programs I find HP program after program that got installed when I tried to use their printers. smtp this, ftp that. I'm still uninstalling.... there is a special place for these companies. Which reminds me - let's get back to MS. And Teams, and all the warnings about how Teams will be discontinued - click here to elephant up your computer. So I did based on some apologist's recommendation for me to stop my $itching and just go to the new free teams: - is the old teams removed? no idea. - what about the paid corporate teams that my cusomter supplied? no idea. - did the new install remove then update to the new Teams? no idea. - etc. I'll cypher this, and I've made a lot of $$ using MS products over the last 20 years, but stop being an apologist for this crap. If you kick a turd, you're probably going to smell something... y'all have a nice weekend. Looks like dry weather in Atlanta, so I can finally cut the grass. Want to know how I boot my JD lawn tracter? I turn the #$%#^^ key. Now, what's funny is JD is trying the same MS $$llcrap with their farm equipment.

Googling seems to suggest you can buy a 4004 CPU chip still. You can get a Altair clone. Power on and off switch right there in the front. Simple switches to run the rest of it. Altair 8800 Clone[^]

Just to hijack the thread, I'm really happy with my JD mower but NEVER get parts from them, they wanted AU214 for a replacement front tyre which I then bought for AU74. Thankfully the guys that work for the distributor are more flexible and generous. I am devolving to printing at the library for my 2-3 pagers per year requirement :-O

My daughter won’t buy a printer. So she has me print at home and bring it to work where she picks it up. My office is only 1km from her apartment. I will tell her to stay away from HP. I had an old Brother/Samsung-guts laser that I finally stopped using because it was parallel interface and it was getting hard to find replacement cartridges. After 5-6 refills, It would need a new cartridge.

now a parallel interface - that's old :). I do miss my Samsung. It installed *one* item, did not elephant up my computer, printed when I wanted it too. I'm going to go work on my Altair I picked up off Ebay.

I hear you on the JD. The stuff they are trying to pull on high end farming equipment is breathtakingly stupid. But for the mowers - same thing sort of. If you want to change your oil, you can buy their "Easy Oil Change" - for USD $40+ for 1 qt of oil and a filter. This subscription BS is ridiculous.

Nope. I do however recognize that complex features lead to complex problems. The simple items I suggested are of course simple.

lol - well here's a pint to you. I fall not so far from the tree of "if it's not broken..." But here at CP, we're sort of technically cognizant and cranky. Thou shalt not elephant with me setup.

Read it again just to see what I was actually posting about and I certainly did not make it clear (not sure why I didn't make that clear.) I was only responding to this fragment. "using MS products over the last 20 years, but stop being an apologist for this crap" I do understand that, although perhaps not that long ago, but certainly at least 10 years, they have not been adding any actual real value. But I also understand that there isn't much new they can add. Not sure how you can make Word better, in a real way. I don't like chat type software much anyways but once you actually get the communication part down adding anything after that is just fluff. But I also recognize that the goal of Microsoft is to make money. Not to make lives better. So they need to keep adding that fluff.

Funny you should mention that, Charlie. I'm supposed to be in a Teams meeting at 8 AM tomorrow, so I fired it up to test it. No go - it won't even load properly. It tried to update, but froze with no update installed.

Right. So far, I have missed the ability to install a new client. It only signed me up for the web version. Very weird. It's like they don't want you to click on the new free version. Wait.... lol
