Sitting at home last night thumbing through the latest copy of Software Development, I suddenly realized that this was just one of far too many magazines that I now get. Most of them I get for free - SD, MSDN (company pays), .NET Magazine (I think - can't even really remember it's proper title), asp.net pro, Visual Developer, etc. I rarely read them through, expect for maybe SD and MSDN and even then it's not a regular event. Most of what I get, information-wise, I get from web sites. Once in a Blue Moon I'll get something of value from one of the mags - but maybe this is because I don't take the time to read them properly. Needless to say, I don't get as excited over them as I did when 2000AD came through the letterbox when I was a kid and nowhere near as excited as I do when "Fine Woodworking" arrives either! If they weren't free, I'd probably get none of them. You?

Yeah, i've been seriously cutting back because of time constraints - though i was very fond of DDJ, i can't really say i miss it 'cause i rarely had time to read it! SD i still get ('cause it's free) I do miss Byte though... :(

I don't subscribe to any actually :-O Back when I travelled to school by train every day, I'd pop into the bookstore and read some computer mags, ranging from Net Professional, .net Mag, Linux Mag, Wired, that sort of thing... In South Africa I read PCFormat (more a gaming magazine actually) and .net. But no, I haven't actually subscribed to any magazines. [edit] BTW, what mag is SD? I'm not too clued up on the magazine front :-O [/edit] Paul ;)

I get Windows developer here at work, and I have to say that it's turned into the worst piece of crap I have seen in years. It used to be a really good mag, but it is now as thin as a piece of toilet paper. I would not pay for it myself if I had to. I used to like MSDN when it was C++/VB, but now it's ASP, .NET, and CR@P! My favorites: C++ User's Journal and Dr. Dobb's Journal. Regards, Brigg Thorp Software Engineer Timex Corporation

SD is Software Development. Its definitely worth a read and can easily be had for free. In fact, I don't know of anyone who actually pays for it. It has a Java orientation, but most subjects are abstract enough to make that (somewhat) irrelevant.

C/C++ Users Journal doesn't really have anything that interests me too much. Seems to focus on STL and obscure C++ grammar and constructs. MSDN.... well, let's just say that if you are not into .Net, there is nothing left in this mag for you. DDJ kind of fell off the mantle a long time ago and now seems to cater to the beginner.  onwards and upwards...

I'll normally have a glance through whatever magazines are in work... so Linux Journal, Software Development and MSDN... there are a few others but I don't really look at them much. Regards, Brian Dela :-)
