India wins, politicians lose

Some of you might remember that a few months back I posted a message about an online petition going about in India to make electoral candidates disclose their personal assets, criminal background if any, and educational qualifications. Well, the petition was a success. Some of the CPians signed the online petition too (Thank You! :) ). Today, I got another email from the organizers (probably others got it too). I am reproducing the content here. Email content follows: ------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Rohit Sinha, Thank you for signing the petition in favour of the Supreme Court ruling of May 2, 2002. It is due to support like yours that India saw a historical SC ruling on March 13, 2003. Now, every electoral candidate MUST declare his/her educational background, assets and liabilities, and any criminal background. Please share this news and published candidate background information during election time with fellow Indians. Please go to vote on Election Day and make the best choice. Alert the Election Commission in case you notice false information declaration by candidates. 2. Recently, the Maharashtra government has again let down the nation by not doing enough to make the pending Right to Information (RTI) bill into law. (RTI will allow the common man to get written details on govt. budgets and expenditure -- something so essential in reducing corruption.) This time, Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan Awardee Shri Anna Hazare is going on a FAST UNTO DEATH to press for measures to clean up the administration. Maharashtara CM, Sushil Shinde is now trying to put roadblocks in Anna’s way: http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=59869[^] Indian volunteers call upon all people of conscience to strengthen Anna Hazare’s cause by joining in a symbolic fast on the 9th, 10th, or 11th August. You can do this by pledging on the website below and observing a partial or full day fast. For complete details and

Most Indians think it means "all", but native speakers (or at least, Americans) use it to mean "alternate".

Yes, But there are exceptions to the "every other" == "alterante" rule unfortuantely to me they are based on context. When you first have identified one object and then make a comparison to it like Rohit did, it's Ok. This sort of nonsense in English Sucks, and I wonder why the rest of the world doesn't make us standardize the language better. Regardz Colin J Davies
