Le Learning Le Language

What languages do you know and how did you learn them? e.g. French, German, Portugese and ancient Greek, not Perl, C++, C# or Progress. I am interested in learning German (for obvious reasons) but for the life of me have no clue where to start. Are the computer based tutors any good? The only language I can honestly say I know enough to get by in, is English. Afrikaans I can offend with or ask for a beer, I can also say potatoe in Zulu. I still reckon my Afrikaans teacher put me high up on the bell curve in school so that I would pass, poor bloke obviously could not stand one more year of Paul Watson mangling his language. David tells me that when I meet Lena's parents I should say the following to her; Ich möchte Ihre Eltern schlachten und sie mit saurkraut essen. :-D regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Anna-Jayne Metcalfe wrote: "Cynicism has it's place in life - but it should be kept well away from your inner self." I can still recall a bit from my days learning French and German at school. (15+ years ago). I have trouble comprehending spoken German and French because of the speed that they say it. A nightschool course is probably the best way to learn a new language; there you will be able to learn with others which will make it better for practising speaking and understanding the spoken language. I speak natively Portuguese, but also semi-decent English and Spanish. I understand very clearly Italian and can also speak it, but not as well as English and Spanish. I'm a German starter, mainly used (the Portuguese version) of this: Deutcshe Welle radio: Language Courses They freely offer some MP3 and PDF files for download so they The MP3 download sucks, use a download manager like FlashGet or GetRight or you are doomed. You can also find their MP3 on P2P (hey, it's free) and get a much better download rate. I guess it is a good way to increase audience: you'll likely hear their radio to improve your German skills. Awesome, thanks for the link Daniel. By the time she dumps me I should be able to say "But baby, I just got here!" in German. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Anna-Jayne Metcalfe wrote: "Cynicism has it's place in life - but it should be kept well away from your inner self." I speak english (fluently, I hope;P). I also speak a little bit french, but would never be able to use it in a business situation. German is my mother tongue, so I obviously am quite good in german. ;) Paul Watson wrote: Ich möchte Ihre Eltern schlachten und sie mit saurkraut essen. They will instantly recognize you as a gourmet. Paul Watson wrote: I can also say potatoe in Zulu. So with that and your knowledge in german, you already speak "foreign" almost fluently! ;P Paul Watson wrote: I am interested in learning German (for obvious reasons) but for the life of me have no clue where to start. Are the computer based tutors any good? I have no idea about computer based tutorials for german, but I can assure you that when you know english and afrikaans (basically a dialect of dutch), you will learn german quite fast. An adress to check out is the 'Goethe institute', an official german institute dedicated to 'cultural transfer'. They often have language courses, they will have a library with german books to practice, and they can offer you all sort of assitance. There is a goethe institute in almost every larger country. So it should be one in SA.

French as native language, German, English and a bit of Latin learned in school. When I'll have some time and some motivation, I'll learn Italian, Spanish and Russian. But it's not for tomorrow :suss: Paul Watson wrote: I am interested in learning German (for obvious reasons) but for the life of me have no clue where to start Live in Germany :) A friend of mine worked for 1 year in Brazil. He did spoke only a few Spanish when he arrived, and now he's fluent in Portuguese. Paul Watson wrote: David tells me [...] With a friend like David, you don't need enemies

I've been studying Spanish during 1 year, approximately 1 hour daily. Now I speak fluently. The biggest progress I made when started to watch movies in Spanish on dvd. My native is Russian and I obviously speak English too. So good luck with German, watch movies! Igor

Three words: Practice, practice, practice! I know some Spanish - I wouldn't say I'm fluent but I can usually carry on a conversation. I had formal Spanish education in high school, and a little in college. However, I kind of let it languish for a few years, but now am getting back into it by going to a conversational class on the weekends. If I were you, I'd try to find a class - either a class from a local college (although you will have to pay for that), or some other random class (like the one I'm in.) Talk to people in German when you can (of course, you already have one person you can talk to... :) ) and just keep practicing. Reading and writing in German would be a big help, too. Can you find books/newspapers/web sites in German? If your nose runs and your feet smell, then you're built upside down.

Back when I was working in SAP, I found at reading the German help became easier and easier, and I actually found it quite helpful after about a year, and that with only infrequent reading as most help was in English. Hallelucination - when you think you see God

Better tell her Parents "Ich möchte Ihre Tochter schlachten und sie mit Sauerkraut essen." That's much more impressive  A course, for starters, is good. German is a fairly complex language, to learn it "the grammar way", you probably have to be a math/lingo whizz. So for the rest of us, talking is important. If you have a reasonable foundation, reading: short stories, poems, song lyrics.
