Following is an e-mail i received from ComponentSource after i was browsing their site looking for Grid components. From : Enrique Perez (Tech Support) Subject : Can I help? _Hi there I was wondering if I can help you out. I noticed from our daily web stats that you spent half an hour with us yesterday looking at Grids. Is there something specific you need the product to do? Just let me know and I'll be glad to help you find the right solution. Kind regards Enrique Perez Technical Support Manager Direct line +44 (0) 118 982 2115 http://www.componentsource.com/contactus_ I know some people would consider this as spam, but to tell you the truth this is the first time i've ever seen such judicious use of server logs.

What I'm really guessing is how they got your e-mail. Should I blame dblclick.net cookies or did you fill a form? Perl combines all the worst aspects of C and Lisp: a billion different sublanguages in one monolithic executable. It combines the power of C with the readability of PostScript. -- Jamie Zawinski

Bianca (I think)) sent me something like this a day after I was looking at the CP store - I was logged in at the time and it did creep me a little bit. Were you logged in at their site too, or did they get it from your IP?

Once upon a time ...(cue fairytale music)... When I was looking to buy my sofa I went to a 'furnitute park' of four or five stores to look round for possibles. I knew I wanted to walk away with one that day if I could, but had no idea or preference of where that would be. In the first store I didnt so much as get a glance from the sales staff who instead sat around chatting waiting to be approached by me. I doubt they even saw me leave. Most of the staff looked like they were in high school. To be honest even if they had the best sofa in the world there for an amazing price I would not have left them with a penny of my custom. In the second store, I was greeted with a simple "Good morning sir" when I walked through the door held open by a smiling salesman who took the time to notice me approaching the store. After a ten minute wander around the store looking at a couple of nice sofas on my own he wandered up to me while I was sitting on one especially comfy one, saw I was not busy in/with myself, and struck up a conversation with "I see you are looking at the corner sofas". (He observed me.) When I replied with "yes" he knew he could close the sale and moved in with the best pitch I've witnessed to-date. We were both nice and open about it all too which made it even more enjoyable. Needless to say I walked out of there having left him a nice commision on his sale. A few days later the same guy phoned me to let me know the initial paperwork had gone through, and I needed to come in to sign the last form. When I arrived the next day he was in the middle of closing another sale but excused himself to deal with me personally. Even though he had already made his comission from me he still risked another sale to ensure my experience was smooth. ...(cue 'back to reality' music)... That guy got my sale because he helped me to make my descision on an almost made up mind - he did not try and force a sale, he did not even try to close it until I showed him I was interested in having him do so. Nowadays companies are so caught up with the "customers are walking wallets" idea, investing in cold calling, random mailing and minimum-wage sales 'staff' left right and centre that when a real salesman approaches you like this you either think they're dishonest or are shocked enough to write a message of praise like you, and I, have. I was going to reply to you with just a single sentance agreeing how nice it is to see propper salesmanship for a change, but damn if that isn't a sad indication of how

I was also contacted and at the time I was impressed. But since, I have not been "browsing" again in the shop in "fear" of having an another unrequested reply. I am not comfortable with being monitored. I also thought... sh*t, they know how many times a day I monitor the ratings on my articles. Are they going to publish a "vain author list"? :)

I had a similar experience with spam email. The subject lines were very similar to some of the mail sitting in my inbox. I don't know if perhaps some legitimate emailer sold them what he had putin the subject line or there is some javascript way of grabbing this. I do know that you can read the history (everything in the dropdown box) with some versions of javascript.
