  • Delphi GUI Programming in 2021?

This is also due to Embarcadero's pricing, I'm sure. Delphi/C++ Builder used to be affordable as hobbies tools when Borland owned them. Not so much any more. :(

  • iPhone "security" ?
    A ajhampson

This is what I was going to suggest. Declining app access to your contacts means it can't just hoover them up wholesale and use them in the app. It can't send everyone in your contacts an email or text asking them to get the app, or transfer all your contacts to a contact list in the app. Sounds like that worked correctly. But iOS does have a "feature" where it will check your contacts for a number and display the contact name instead of the number. So this could be what is happening. Unless the app is doing a screen capture and converting that to text, it still wouldn't have access to that contact information. I'm not sure if this is an API or an integral part of the OS, but it's caused some misunderstandings before IIRC.

Agreed. KeePass is awesome. I like the fact that I can keep the application and multiple password databases (work, home, etc.) on a thumb drive or equivalent so I can always have it with me.

LOL! That's great! When I was teaching myself C, the Datalight C compiler gave me this: "Lvalue required". I had no idea at the time what an lvalue was and the "internet" at the time consisted of dial-up bulletin boards. That made for a fun afternoon. ;P

Their products is all they care about.

That was actually my point (hidden in all the grousing ;P ): O'Reilly used to be one of the best book publishers, because books were their product. Now their business seems centered around conferences and the subscription model. I understand the book market probably isn't what it used to be, and companies have to adjust to survive. I just really don't like the subscription model at all for books, music, or video. As an aside, I am with you on owning physical copies. I have nearly all my music on physical CDs. All the video I care about is on DVD or BR. My book collection is also pretty big. I mainly buy e-somethings for the convenience of being able to travel with a collection in my tablet or phone. I try really hard not to get e-anything that I can't download and keep a copy of.

  • So Long O'Reilly
    A ajhampson

I just went to the O'Reilly site to check on a ebook I thought I "owned" and I saw this notice: "In March 2020 the Members Library will be shutting down Please download any ebook, video compilation, or other content you wish to save prior to March 2020." And, the notice is on the Library Sign-in page [^], so if you don't have to sign in, you won't see it. Funny part is this blurb at the top of my library (emphasis mine): "Every ebook and video you’ve purchased through your O’Reilly account is available below. You get lifetime access to these products, and we will alert you when they are updated." I guess their lifetime is way shorter than mine. O'Reilly used to be my go-to publisher for books. You could almost never go wrong buying a Nutshell book. I was surprised when they stopped selling their own books. Now they can't even be bothered to keep the space for ebooks they promised to give you "lifetime access" to. Their entire focus seems to be shifting to trade conferences and the so-called O'Reilly online learning, which is their subscription access service, formerly Safari. I know books are "passé", and I'm probably dating myself by still wanting to read them, but this seems like another great service dying in favor of subscription pricing. Anyway, enough ranting. Bottom line, if you have ebooks on O'Reilly and you want to keep them, be sure to get them downloaded prior to March. Alan

Since the converter you link to has a free demo license available, get it and give it a try. That's the best way to see what will happen. I do agree with the general answer here though: It would probably be better, faster, cheaper to just rewrite in the new target language.

  • Any iOS Devs Out There? The challenges
    A ajhampson

I definitely second the RayWenderlich.com recommendation. They stay up to date and have some awesome authors. I like IOS Development With Swift[^]. Manning has the same author doing the content as tutorial videos. I did see that you don't care for those, but he keeps the pace moving pretty quickly. Also, coincidentally, Manning is having a sale today, half off pbooks and videos (code is DOTD120318). Details are their page. I've also read and liked Swift Development with Cocoa[^], although that one is getting a bit old now (2015). The authors are iOS developers. Hope you can find something that suits your needs and isn't out of date. It does change so very quickly that I wonder if books are still the answer.

  • Readable code, taken too far (too Swift)?
    A ajhampson

I think partly this is a holdover from Objective-C. For example, this Cocoa method call:

UIAlertView* alert = [[UIAlertView alloc] initWithTitle:@"Hello!"
    message:@"Hello, world!"
    delegate:nil
    cancelButtonTitle:@"Close"
    otherButtonTitles:nil];

which calls initWithTitle to create a new pop-up with a message for the user. It uses the external notation and if I remember correctly (always problematic) the notation was required on all but the first argument, where it was optional. This used to be more important when mixing Swift with Objective-C, but now most (if not all) of the various OS APIs are implemented in Swift, so it's less relevant. The exception is if you're using your own Objective-C code with Swift, or slowly converting a project over from one to the other.

We use Visual Studio Team Services, now Azure DevOps [^]. It's essentially the online version of TFS. You can create projects as either Agile or Scrum. Lots of visual, drag and drop support and it directly links stories, tasks, bugs, etc. to TFS/VSTS repository check-ins.

  • VS Code On Linux
    A ajhampson

Also, VSCode (for whatever reason) doesn't support text highlighting or intellisense for C# or C++ out of the box. You have to go get plugins for that. I'm using Microsoft's plugins and they work really well. On the plus side, there are plugins for just about any language in common use. I have SQL, Swift, C#, C++, etc. installed. Also found a very good diff plugin. You might want to take a look at this: Using .NET Core in Visual Studio Code[^] as a good starting point for both. With the dotnet new command, I always use the --output option because it creates the folder and then creates the new project in that folder. The documentation is here[^] I've enjoyed using VSCode and .Net Core together on a Mac. It's getting better with each release (so far). alan

OK, so in my defense -- The right monitor is Windows, the left is MacOS and the center one switches between the two, depending on what I'm working on. I usually keep email or music up on the laptop screens. and the iPad is just because I can. :-D Here's a bit of less technical beauty which is why I stay in this area: This was a June day not so long ago, and the snow across the road was still 6-8 feet deep. I ride the Harley most days unless the streets are icy. Love Colorado!
