  • I hate MS sometimes.
    A Alex C Duma

I had to work with Microsoft products for decades, and I can tell you they often have issues so big that they know of for years and don't fix you won't believe. It's like your car vendor will give your car with 3 wheels instead of 4 and kind-of get away with it. For instance Outlook mobile does not sync folders except for inbox and you miss emails unless you manually sync those folders yourself every 5 minutes MS Teams for instance will generate notifications for all your messages on all your devices, regardless you read them on your PC, also if you did not open teams on your phone for 1 week, you will get all notifications for every one of hundreds of messages you chat on your PC. How obvious it is it shouldn't be like that, did they never used whatsapp? And now with Windows 11, take taskbar missing drag and drop feature, which will take them 1 year to fix. Wasn't it obvious from the start it was hugely important for productivity. ...well I guess nobody is perfect, maybe not even close to perfect, regardless how big they are...

  • Push notifications to IsolatedStore
    A Alex C Duma

Hello everyone, I have asked this question few days ago on windows phone forum and so far no one took interest to answer and I hoped I get more luck here. The question is why not having push notifications to ...isolated storage. This would be a new type of push notification similar to tile push notification but instead of updating a tile, it would write a short text to IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings[] the purpose it would serve is keeping the application informed on whatever happen while it was stopped. If you look at all apps that use push notifications to tiles, it is easy to see that while the tiles show some updated information (eg. current weather), the application knows nothing about it and when it starts it shows data loaded days back from a previous run. It is true that (when internet connection is available) the application can refresh its data and the tiles but that takes some time (3-10 seconds in real scenarios), time in which the user is presented with outdated information he doesn't want to see. I believe that this feature would bring some power and smoothness to WP with zero impediments. Help me with any thoughts for why this feature would be great, or bad, or irrelevant.... Thanks

  • What's "convenient" for the developer is rarely good for the end user
    A Alex C Duma

I dont think the statement is necessarily true. I've seen cases when developers made more informed decisions than customers did, and far more informed then ones coming from the management/marketing area. Although it is clear that this is not the right decisional chain, developers can help a lot in the process. They are forced to think for the inner details of the product, which more than often are not covered in project documentation and sometimes happen to contravene with that. For those projects that are not specified with mathematical precision, the developers must be part of the decisional chain, and if they do their job right, what's convenient for them, on long term, is convenient for the customer and viceversa.

  • Yer cannae change the laws of physics, Jim!
    A Alex C Duma

    1. The laws of physics are the same, everywhere in the universe If you have an apple falling from a tree, you would be able to calculate the time it reaches earth by using Newton's famous equation. However, if the tree is sank under the water the equation would seem wrong. That's because we didn't considered all the other forces present, or, the equation was not complex enough (e.g. for the case we need to consider the relativistic effects). Generally, there is always a broader context that covers all facts, so you will be able to precisely calculate the apple falling under the water. The statement "The laws of physics are the same, everywhere in the universe." would be equivalent to "All that is, is what it is", which would be true. 2. The laws of physics do not change This is acctually the same question as the first. ...so they both are true :)

  • Algorithm Complexity
    A Alex C Duma

Understanding the question is half the answer. Make sure that you understand the same thing as your boss does when you say "alghorithm complexity". Honestly, for me alghorithm complexity and code complexity are about the same thing(semantically speaking) since alghorithms are the things that are coded. Now the question is what exactly do you mean by "complexity". if you are intrested in performance, you should check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_O_notation[^] otherwise if you should chose some metrics based on what you are looking for. Things like is 1+1+1 more complex that 1+2 or just the same. Well, good luck!

  • LINQ and the future of database design/programming
    A Alex C Duma

I too believe LINQ has a small future. And if there is a bet to make I'd put my money on the ms entity framework. It turns out that MS proprietary ideeas are usually poor, but when they inspire from other products like those from Sun or Oracle, they manage to outrun the competition. So, considering that the MS Entity Framework is not an "entirely" MS concept we might see something very nice there.
