i want to read a particular file format into my application say *.jpg for example, how can i do this, surely I don't have to write the code from scratch or do I have to buy a proprietary library? Check out Microsoft's Documentation[^] on getElementsByTagName(). This is in the W3C's DOM Level 1 ... always a good thing to use standards. Another suggsetion is to add handlers for the WM_LBUTTONDOWN and WM_LBUTTONUP messages in your dialog (or view) class. In these functions, test if the position (the point parameter) is on the button. For this you can use CWnd::ChildWindowFromPoint (take a look at the documentation) and then call GetDlgCtrlID for the CWnd that is returned to see if this is your button. You can also use flags to keep trace if the button is pressed or not. Hope this helps

The comment in this code snippet appears to be outdated. Have you stepped into the code to verify that 'ch' has valid data at the time of appending? When you state that "ch is a string", does that mean it is a string object, or are you using string in the generic sense (e.g., char ch[32])?

VC++ compiles it just fine. If it throws up an error about missing "unistd.h", just create a blank file and put it in your include directory. It's not a necessary file, but it saves from messing with the source :). I can't remember if it asks for it or not. I think that the generated lex or bison C files include it, but it's not necessary and a blank dummy file works fine. As Nishant explains in his article a modal dialog makes a call to DestroyWindow() and as a result to PostNcDestroy(). But in your example you are building a modeless dialog and Windows is very specific about this case. You need to call DestroyWindow() to close a modeless dialog. Why? I don't know. This decision was made by windows. I will do a little bit of investigating though to find out. However, in this case OnClose() doesn't generate an WM_DESTROY message afterwards. And by the way this part of your code DestroyWindow(); CDialog::OnClose(); generates an exception because you are sending a WM_CLOSE message to a window that doesn't exist. // Afterall I realized that even my comment lines have bugs

All you need to do is update the value of m_nCommsToggleState. The UPDATE_COMMAND_UI handler should do the rest. If you try to remove the check mark without changing m_nCommsToggleState, the handler will put the check mark back again.
