  • Legacy Issues
    B Bram van Kampen

Hi all, I've been called out of retirement to deal with some legacy issues. Got myself a stand alone computer with XPSp2 installed, and installed VS97, original version, bought on Ebay. Two Issues:- (1) The Original VS97 version has "issues" such as hanging at building, dodgy resource Editor, etc. Does anyone know where to find the Service Packs to hopefully resolve these issues? (2) The Help Files do not work, because at the time of XPSP2 they had become a Security risk. From memory, it was a matter of changing a Registry key to put them back into action. Does anyone remember which key, and what to change to. Any help is much appreciated.

The question is: Do you seriously want to learn how to become an IT specialist, who can code, or are you more interested in the party type student life. The problems you want resolved are quite trivial, and I could easily write you the required lines. However, I will not! You seem to be early in your course. I have no doubt that your college provided you with the resources required where you can find out how to write this code. Read it, and Try it out, fail and Learn. Writing Code is about Trying and Learning, the whole time. You write the Code, Compile it. You get Compiling errors. That means that the Compiler does not understood what you wrote. Solve them, it Compiles. Now you have a running program or App. Does the App do what you want it to do! Very Often it does not. They call that Debugging! I learned C and CPP/MFC the hard way. By myself, trial and error. My University simply did not have a computer that students could work with in 1974. My first computer was a Commodore 64 in 1985, where I learned the beginnings of Machine Code and ASM programming. A small PC with a C Compiler came as a godsend, and at the time I was in no doubt what compilers linkers, and debug/retail versions did and could do. You have an institution with resources behind you. Use those resourses and learn. Stop asking this forum to resolve your exam questions. Believe it or not, Everybody on this forum has met intractable issues, All of us have been students, one way or the other. We deal with real science here. Helping you to spoof your exam is never a way forward.

Hi, Trying to start a New Database in Open Office. Cannot do so, the system baulks at a missing JRE. Installed several of these, to no avail. Updated the Environment Path settings (now that brings me back 40 years)(That was on the advice on UTube from some indian Guru in these matters), Still to no avail. How can one get this DB to go! To be clear, I want (for now) to create a Database on and for one computer only. Regards, Bram.

  • Brexit Revisited
    B Bram van Kampen

Well, No, This is not a bait for a Flame War. This was intended as a comedy remark. Brexit however, has not gone away, it has "Not Been Done", despite the promises by Boris. In the end, he did not get Brexit Done, he left the NI part of the UK out of it. It is thankfully from my point of view still within the EU in many important aspects. The bigger question is, what is deemed "Religious" or "Political". Religion or Politics, or both are part of peoples experience of life. Does that merely mean "Controversial". Is LGBT political? Where is the Definition! Is it out of bounds here to connect with people in Hongkong. because of laws there. If so, can they not protest on this forum about curtailment of democracy? I think there should be a wider policy debate here about how things are classified on the world stage. Please consider this concept carefully The lounge suggest free talk, and a place where one is free to talk about any issues, whatsoever. It is also a Physical Safe Place. No one knows each others front door, nor email address. What is wrong with that. Bram.

    B Bram van Kampen

Hi All, Brexit has been an absolute boon for Northern Ireland, We Really have best of both worlds here now. The unionists here are too stupid to understand that, but, I'M not surprised. That crowd wants to return to 1950. Above that, A United Ireland is now in sight. Island wide discussion are taking place about reunification! Good all around! The EU Protocol works very well INDEED! It gives the reactionary Unionists here a well deserved Toe up their arse! They wanted the harshest Brexit ever to get an Irish Border on the island That backfired, the border is now in the sea. • C++ Structure layouts - how to determine padding and what not - VS2008 but it's a general question
    B Bram van Kampen

Well, the Packing pragma is very old. A Pragma is an adidional instruction to the compiler, stated in te file to be compiled. In the Packing case, it is about how to align data on Preferred Data Boundaries. A 64 bit CPU is most efficient if all items are stored at addresses, a multiple of 64. Failing to do so, the code will not break down. it will just take (very minutely) longer to execute, but will never break your code. Now, you can Easily enter "Packing Hell"! That occurs when different packing pragma's are used in different components. Unless if something is critical, the best idea is to leave all packing pragments out, unless you have reasons to use them, e.g. Interfacing a new 64 structure with say old 16 or 32 bit data.

Well, the same ass what happens currently when the electricity goes down, or a disk fails. These things have happened. We close the shop, and indeed on those rare occasions, people get their clothes back via a manual system, but, payment is not asked for. Actually Handing in far processing is far more challenging. We would require an automatic sync at least 10 times per hour.

Well Everyone, Northern Ireland is thankfully still in the EU, despite Brexit. The Unionists here are squirming about that. An independent Scotland will soon follow. The word here is: Let England Rot, The border here in the sea should be more enforced, to stop any trade with the UK. Bram.

Hi, I have a successful Laundrette and Dry Cleaner application written in CPP, and MFC. It is more than 20 years old now.I want to start afresh again, this time using cloud storage. I have the 20 year experience of how such application should work in real time. I now want to move to "The Cloud" for data storage and licensing to get paid. Any suggestions on how to get this started. Bram.

  • Donald Trump and Injecting Cleaning Fluids against Covid-19
    B Bram van Kampen

Well, This is not Venom that I articulated. It is a very widely held opinion across western Europe. Like it or not, Trump is considered as a dangerous clown in all the serious press in Western Europe. Maybe the Press in America does not fully report this fact. What everyone in Europe is more concerned with is, How could a country like America choose such clown as a president. I can send you any number of papers with headlines about western european concerns about trump. Go back to the Original point: The President of the Free World suggesting on world wide TV injecting Cleaning Fluids to combat Covid-19. It may have been in jest, but, in his position, and with his record, he should have thought better of it. It is not that long ago that he marked the whole of Covid-19 as a hoax invented by the democrats.

What is the rule of the site in this, Are we no longer allowed to call a spade a spade? This has nothing to do with politics, it has to do with facts! On this side of the atlantic, Trump is seen as a Total Idiot, and, for good reason. He proceeds to prove that point on a daily basis. Had Obama done the same, I would have made exactly the same comments. It has none to do with politics, but about doing the right thing versus the idiocy that seems for now to prevail. :)
