What caught my attention is how people who: 1. have known that the storm of the century was coming their way, 2. could see this huge thing coming at them STILL stay there and not evecuate?! Frankly, I don't feel sorry at all for those people who stayed behind because they thought they could ride out Katrina. bibamus, edamus, cras moriemur

Linux for serious web applications?MySQL grew because it was fast and cheap. It never was feature-rich until recently. I suggest Postgress if you want a free db which is also feature-rich. As PaulW said: if Google and Yahoo run Linux then surely its good enough for most people ;) bibamus, edamus, cras moriemur

IRAQ nuke attackBangerman wrote: You cant demand that your "enemies" dont develope the weapons that you have stated you intend to use. Of course this is two-faced. And even more, when it comes to international relations it is perfectly normal and acceptable behviour. Don't be naive. Bangerman wrote: I think SH is a threat to peace, but I kinda think that of Bush as well. You are effectively implying moral equivalency here between a democracy and a murderous tyrant. This either shows that you don't really know what you're talking about or that you're one of those soft-headed, bleeding heart liberals who think that all the world's problems are the West's fault. Frankly, until you know the difference between Richelieu and Woodrow Wilson you're just another uninformed poster trying to look intelligent. Brian Azzopardi. bibamus, edamus, cras moriemur

What we are and what is this universe?Megan Forbes wrote: So you are a follower of Darwin? Yes. I've read Dawkins too. Megan Forbes wrote: Seriously, it's very sad that humans think they are so almighty that there couldn't possibly be something greater than them that they can't understand. I couldn't agree more! That is exactly what all religions try to be: priests/religions think that they can explain everything in this world and even the next and are so sure of themselves that they used to kill people for doubting them. Now surely that is the ultimate in arrogance? There is nothing greater than human beings and there is everything. Megan, why do you percieve the existence of God. You surely cant be certain he/she/it exists? What proof do you have? Not believing is not a sign of arrogance, it's just facing the facts. I on the other hand realize how fragile and frail human life is and know that the world out there is a strange and alien place full of surprises. Megan Forbes wrote: prepared to have this limitation in their minds, instead of exploring the possibilities Again, I couldn't agree more. Religion is full of dogma, constantly closing doors. Science and people of a curios nature always leave the door open to the unknown, waiting, indeed, hoping for the next new thing. When was the last time the pope was waiting for the next new thing? Religion is a very negative thing: it reiforces prejudice while constantly saying no the outside world. What we are and what is this universe?I won't answer for Paul but here my $0.2: Aisha Ikram wrote: what is our end? We do not have an end. Aisha Ikram wrote: where we will eventually go? Maggot food. Aisha Ikram wrote: are we totally destroyed after our deaths? Nope. Our body will decompose and act as "food" for the soil and maggots. Cows will eat the grass that used to be bits of your body. A mother will drink that cow's (processed) milk and one day give birth a beautiful baby. So, in a way, we are eternal :) Aisha Ikram wrote: we have came from We evolved. Ever heard of Darwin? Aisha Ikram wrote: you have ever studied biology, it was proved that a non-living cell can't create a living cell, only a living cell can produce another living cell. Bullshit. I have studied biology. Ever heard of Darwin? A "living" cell is considered as living because it exhibits certain properties. Scientists have managed to artificially create "life"; i.e. they got a bunch of chemicals to exhibit certain properties which collectively are called "life". Aisha Ikram wrote: very first living cell Ever heard of Darwin? (I'm getting a sense of deja vu here. Are u? :)) We are ultimately a bunch of chemicals. Chemical properties change and different arrangements can produce different results viz: both me and Saddam Husein can be termed as living but I sure as hell hope I'm different than him. Is reducing human beings to a bunch of chemicals too reductive? In a way it is; after all Leonardo da Vinci/Mozart/Eistein were much more than just a collection of elements. This is where random mutation and evolution come together; a "miracle" happened and the right combination of chemicals along with the right social conditions created these geniuses. If all the above seems simplistic to you or too cynical be my guest; I can understand why people need to believe that a god exists and that life has meaning; that's why people with huge egos used to build pyramids. Most people have an emotional need and don't let the facts get in the way of good story (Bible/Koran/etc). I'm one of those people who don't mind spoiling a good story; I prefer the truth. Why O Why!Why is game programming so hard? I'm working on my first ever game and to say it's "challenging" would be understimating the size of the challenge by an order of magnitude. It has consumed me totally - I even wake up early before I go to work and put in around an hour/ hour and a-half working on it before I go to work to code. And when I get back home I barely eat before I have my nose shoved down some crazy document from Nvidia. I can only say that it's very addictive! Thank god I have a very understanding girlfriend :) Has any of u got so engrossed in a project? I hope I'm not the only one, I surely can't be? US middle east relationsFelix Gartsman wrote: Influence? Sure. Everybody does it. But talking as it forces US to act against its interests, is different But that's the whole point! It is in America's interest to open up to Cuba yet an influential Cuban minority support the opposing view. The same goes for every other pressure group including the Jewish lobby. Giving such explicit and generous support to Israel, yet at the same time stationing American troops on Arab Holy Land (Saudi Arabia) is bad foreign policy from the purely American point of view. America would do itself a huge favour if it was seen as neutal in the Mid-East. But the Jewish lobby will make sure this does not happen. If you seriously and honestly believe that America declaring that Ariel Sharon is a "man of piece" is in it's own interest than you are living in cuckoo-land. US middle east relationsFelix Gartsman wrote: And dozens of high level officials are Irish, so the US supported IRA? Well aren't there? And don't they? Ever heard of NorAid? It is an Irish-American organisation to help the IRA. Yes, America did support the IRA sending it weapons and money. Felix Gartsman wrote: Like typical anti-semitism story I knew you were gonna say this. You are accusing me of being an anti-semite yet you don't know me. Were did I say that all Jews should be killed? I did not say that. What I did say was that Jews and other interest groups have undue influence on US policy making. Yes, even the Irish. If saying the above makes me an anti-semite and a racist then God help us! By the same standards I must be anti-French coz I dislike escargot! Accusing people of being anti-semitic/racist is common tactic to shut people up and stifle debate. It is also a cheap one. Because someone does not agree with you does not make them anti-semitic. Hurling such an accusation at your opponenet without proof lowers the level of debate and debases the word "anti-semite". Frankly, grow up! Felix Gartsman wrote: Lovely to see arab propoganda blended with european self-hatred What arab propoganda? Was there or not a massacre in Beirut in the 80's? I condemn strongly violence on both sides. Suicide bombers are nothing but terrorists but that does not make Sharon a holy man either. I don't read or need Arab or Israeli agitprop. I've got a brain and I like to use it. As for european self-hatred: what does that have to do with it? Lefies in Europe are against Isreali policy in the mid-east but please do not confuse me with them. I'm nothing if not right-wing; however I also try to be objective. Both Isreal and the Palestinians have alot to answer for. Brian Azzopardi PS, How much are the new settlements in the Gaza strip going for?
