Years ago IBM was the king of the hill and no one believed that would ever change. Mainframes and PC's were both computers but considered different IT fields at the time. As time and technology changes so do the major players. Even today there are billions of lines of COBOL still in production and most are probably running on an OS other than Windows. Whether it's Google or ABC Nano/BioTech Corp (not a real company, at least I dont think it is), when a new whiz bang technology emerges the industry leader(s) will change and no one will care about compatibility with the old methods.
