  • To contract or not?
    C canOgrog

It really depends on your circumstances; if it's something that excites you and you really want to try it, I'd recommend staying in FTE for another 12 months and saving up a couple months wages on the side, if you can. Spend the first month of contracting reviewing how many jobs you're getting in and maybe limit yourself to 2 at a time (if you get lucky). After the first month, if you're finding it's not very fruitful then maybe return to FTE and do a few jobs on the side - that couple months wages you saved earlier could cover you while you find the right job. But yes, waiting until you've got a few more years' experience under your belt is a decent idea. I suppose it also depends on what your outgoings are - at the moment, I myself wouldn't risk going into contracting, and risk is the keyword here. :~

Courier New is just THE font to program in! I only use MS VS .NET 2003 (a gift from university) and Macromedia Dreamweaver (and one from my beloved former employer) to program in and the colours make the world of difference. Actually... I don't know the font size, etc., but who has time to change it these days!

C#: Concerned about image, thin glasses, modern black duffle coat/jacket, smart dress code basically! Oh and always with a Starbucks coffee in one hand... Java: Chequered shirt and possibly a goatee... a bit overweight. Perl: Very dark dress code, usually a Linux guru with tendencies to hate Microsoft. Oracle: Armani, Versace, Dior... you name it! Well, these are only from my experience, it will be interesting to see all the others!

One problem of making money is having the capital to start it off. How do you resell these things off eBay if you can't afford to buy it in the first place? If you're not in a cash rich position, you could use even the most basic HTML skills to create websites for your friends or friends of friends. We seem to be at a point now where the middle-ground of non-IT contractors want to get themselves up on the web... provided they pay hosting/domain costs (which are now dirt cheap), you don't need to put in any capital to create websites for them. I'm 23 and even my friend's Dad suggested me doing a website for him (advertising properties in Hungary or something). Also my own Dad wants one doing but, of course, I'm not charging him (only because it's nearly Christmas). You could also get a few old college buddies together and try to set up a business without too much risk (alongside full-time job perhaps). Oh... don't forget the tax man!

Actually my creative mind is at a standstill, so I don't quite know how it'd work. Also, me and my ex-colleague are thinking of starting up a small business in web design, so I have to focus all my non-working hours into that!

Very true that this how the world works!!! I suppose people live with things like this, but it should change depending on the circumstances you're in. This poor soul has had a crime committed against him... shouldn't this become an exception for help? It's fair to say I'd trust my own programs given decent testing! But I haven't looked into (or thought) how a program like this might work, it's just something off the cuff and I'd need to put a lot of thought into it. I don't actually know how Norton's password management works to be honest; I should have a try of it before I pass it off!

That's really worrying... surely if a crime like this has been committed, you shouldn't have to pay to get credit applications flagged up. This is something the authorities should do for you out of duty, being a tax payer and all. The principle of it sucks I think! What else could you do... well, I think you've done all you can, which is to make sure nobody attempts to use your identity for credit applications. Is there any way that they might have your bank account details? If so, close your account immediately! Who knows how much could be transferred out of your account. Another thing that worries me is password security on the Internet. I have a sort of format with mine that's easy to remember, and it involves a random password too. What I'm really worried about is some administrator who has access to login details (and security/trust is going to be different at the countless websites that my details are on) figuring out password formats and hacking my other accounts. This is conceding that I'm not going to have a random password for every single user account I have online because how can you manage this securely? I've heard Norton's Internet Security has some sort of password management module... but I definitely wouldn't trust a program to keep my passwords secure... my brain can do that more securely! Any thoughts? Good luck with foiling your perpetrator.

  • What programming language?
    C canOgrog

When I went to university, I struggled to really grasp the programming language they taught there (which was Java). After working as a web developer for the last couple of years, I've found that the 'easier' programming of web languages, such as PHP or ASP, have seriously helped my skills in programming C# .NET. I would recommend making an hour or two per day with a good tutorial book and some Java (coffee) that will guide you through setting up a dynamic website (can be set up on your own PC if you have XP Pro) in ASP/SQL, if you wish to go down the avenue of Microsoft languages. You can also use the W3C schools to supplement any quick-fire "how to" things that you need answering. I do remember a report on here a month back stating that most available jobs were in C# by an absolute mile!
