On C64, as long as you kept sprites vertically separated, you could have 8 sprites on the first “stripe”, interrupt! Switch sprite bank, repeat. You would only be able to detect collisions within the “stripes”. My favorite trick was to point a sprite to page/address 0000. It gave a nice monitor where you could see the pixels of the system time on the screen.

You can have the schematics and my assembly code for version 0.1. You can easily replicate it on a breadboard and I can point you in the right directions to find useful tools like an assembler and an emulator. Zwölf 0.1 is very bare bones, so that the emulator can still be reconfigured to the few changes to the old Elf. That is really helpful to get you started. Unfortunately the emulator will become useless once I get more of the Zwölfy features working, but I'm already in contact with the author who wants to make the emulator more versatile anyway. Still, the processor is very different from the other 8 bit processors of the time and the emulator will probably be a great help to get you more familiar with it. Later, we will be on our own. Zwöf is a departure from the old Elf concept and therefore most old software and tools will not be very helpful anymore. We are mostly on our own, but that's part of the fun. Not very much more came up, but I found at least two other interesting articles. One was about the source code for a PDP-8 emulator which could run on both my old Elf and the Zwölf on the breadboard. And there is a complete implementation of floating point routines that also would work on both. Zwölf does not have anything like that, so I might adapt and include this one. And there is also a reference to an article about some kind of hardware support for indexed addressing for 8080 based systems. It was only mentioned in a letter from a reader and he thought about doing the same to the Z80s, 6800s and 6502s of this world. His comment regarding the CDP1802 makes me even more curious: WHAT FOR??? That could mean that he understood the little 1802 only too well, or possibly not at all. Not so much. The big difference is that the truck will not lie at the side of the road until the tank is rusted through. The motor oil is the only damage that actually has happened.
