  • Programmers who changed their careers
    D Dark Hippo

I don't know anyone who has changed their career, but I'm about to. I haven't been in this game as long as most of you, I've only been programming for around 3.5 years, but that's enough for me. There's no one thing that makes me want to pack it all in, I just need a change from sitting in front of a computer all day watching my body fall apart from it. So, I'm quitting my IT job and heading to Mexico to work with a volunteer organisation teaching scuba diving and educating people on marine conservation. Can't wait :)

  • How do programmers relax?

There's a climbing wall at Copleston High School in Ipswich (I believe it's called The Leading Edge), although I've never actually used that one. The main one I go to is in Stowmarket called The Cragg [^]. Like I said, haven't been to the Ipswich one, but I've heard they don't have any top ropes and don't allow bouldering, so you have to partner up with someone who knows how to lead. The Cragg on the other had has one side dedicated to bouldering (wall is only 4m high) and the other side as climbing with top ropes already hung. It's about £5 for 90 minutes, but I've been in there most of the day and no one's said anything, just keep friendly with the staff and they don't seem to care how long you stay for :)

I've only just started, so still on the indoor stuff. Plus I tend to head to the wall by myself, so boulding is my only option really. I know what you mean about your fingers recovering, first time I spent a few hours climbing, I had real trouble typing the next day at work :)

I read, dive (scuba), climb (indoor bouldering), hit the gym, and occasionally play a little WoW. Since I spend all day in front of a computer, I like to get out and about to relax.
