I'm a-goin' the whole hog and porting to .NET 4. Well... going "half hog" insofar as there will be no code changes (yet), only target the newer runtime and new tooling.

General moan. I joined a new team at work as tech lead and the app stack is written almost entirely in .NET 1.1 (with some good ol' VB6 and hacked .bat's for good measure). It's not the code itself that's bugging me - it's the IDE. I've never liked the 1.1 IDE. Maybe others here will differ but to me it's slow and fugly. Ick. I'll be porting it over .NET 4 from around mid July so there's hope. Just fired the 2003 IDE up, felt a bit ill and decided to run here for solace and procrastination. Haven't used it for the last 6 years and it irks me that I feel like taking the position was a step backwards (even tho' it's actually a really good opportunity for me). Anyone else still using .NET 1.1? Brothers in arms - I feel your pain!

Ego surfing :) I was talking with (she might say "boring") my wife yesterday on Jeff's post on Google search rankings[^] and thought of using my own article as an example. There's a few posts on their that are ripped straight off of CP with no credit back to the original author or links back to CP.

  • What is your best code comment this year?
    D Dave Sexton

I litter my code with trinkets for the other members of the team and as little gems for the future. With over 500 assemblies and millions of lines of code, the chances of finding comments ranging from the mundane to the hilarious are pretty slim. Apart from the standard // Workaround for & // to do: there are: /* you're the real thing, yeah the real thing, even better than the real thing. :ds */ (under a particularly crafty bit of genius) // f*** direct debits, I wanna go home :ds (after a particularly long night wrestling with a settlement instruction file) // who's yer daddy? :ds (above call to an inherited method) I still comment my code adequately with "normal" comments. Just find this makes code more fun to read.

    Consider this:

    1. South African citizens need a work permit to work in Ireland.
    2. South African citizens DO NOT need a visa to enter Ireland as a tourist and can stay here for up to 3 months sans permits, etc. Working is not allowed.

Although I'm skipping a number of details it would be entirely possible for you to apply to a few positions, lining up interviews over a 2 - 3 week period, fly out, do the interviews and discuss work permits with interested potential employers. It would, of course, be the decent thing to let them know that you'd need a work permit up front. My philosophy is that opportunities are made, not found. Good luck. http://www.irishjobs.ie/

Trek die kant toe. It's colder, the food is bad and the people not nearly as friendly as "they" would have you believe but on the plus side you can earn a boatload of cash and travel extensively for relatively little. If you work in finance/banking (and you're good) you can earn close to ZAR1M p/a. Not a bad old life, I can tell you.

That's unique to SA, no-one else calls them that. Freaked my dad out when we first moved to SA in 1980, he got pulled over by a traffic cop who said (after determining that my father spoke no Afrikaans) "Ekskuus me, sihrr. Does you knows you jest went froo a rrrred rrrrrobot?" "I beg your pardon" said Dad, "A what?" "A rrred rrrobot". Stunned silence from my dad, who looked around looking for some form of mechanical marvel, a fantastic metal beast painted in glorious red livery with a car shaped hole in. "I... uh... what?" "A traffis laaight!" "Oh!" says Dad, "You mean a traffic light..." Say Brady - stuur bietjie biltong china. Ons kry fokol hier :)

  • UI Suggestion
    D Dave Sexton

Disclaimer: This might have actually existed once upon a time & been removed because it didn't work well in practice. Seems like a good idea in my head, but the reality might actually be stupid. I really like the default CP message board layout & the way it sparks discussion but I sometimes struggle (mostly in the lounge) to see how a reply links back up to a previous reply a few posts up, particularly if one reply spawns a new discussion. It helps if the poster quotes from the reply he is replying to but when there's 5+ or so posts between it gets harder and is just the slightest bit more taxing on the brain than if there were a visual clue of how a reply related to another. The UI suggestion: Run a thin, almost treeview-esque line between the replies when the number of posts between two replies exceeds a certain number. E.g. The current layout:-

    Message
    Reply A
    Reply A.1
    Reply A1.1
    Reply A1.1.1
    Reply A1.1.2
    Reply A1.1.3
    Reply A1.1.4
    Reply A1.1.1.1
    Reply A1.2
    Reply A1.2.1
    Reply A1.2.1.1
    Reply A2

In this case it's not immediately clear that Reply A1.2 is a reply to A1. At first glance one could mistake it as being a reply to A1.1. The suggestion:

    Message
    Reply A
    Reply A.1
    | Reply A1.1
    | Reply A1.1.1
    | Reply A1.1.2
    | Reply A1.1.3
    | Reply A1.1.4
    | Reply A1.1.1.1
    |--Reply A1.2
    Reply A1.2.1
    Reply A1.2.1.1
    Reply A2

A thin line provides a visual clue that A1.2 is a reply to A1. Personally, I don't think that these visual clues should be visible all the time as that would really mess up the UI. They should appear & disappear depending on which reply has focus.
