    D DontSailBackwards

Yeah, with 8 MHz it was pretty-much a necessity if you wanted to scroll all them characters on that massive screen. If I recall, I poke'd an array into a space in RAM & called it. That involved a lot of leafing through the inch-thick programmer's manual that you could buy. I think I wore out the binding on it. Only sold the Vic 20 6 months ago, actually. Still worked & was in original box n all.

  • The day you realized you were a programmer ...
    D DontSailBackwards

When I thought that BASIC was too slow on my Vic 20 to scroll the screen so I wrote a routine in 6502 & called it from a game I wrote in BASIC. Then I wandered away from programming for 20 years, having only just recently returned to discover .NET. I guess the 3-1/2k of RAM in the Super Expander won't cut it nowadays but back then I wrote a game in BASIC that integrated 9 different games & screens into 1... in 6-1/2k of RAM.

I second that. Gave myself a 40% raise a year ago, dropped back to 3-days / week (mostly, give or take but I am supposed to be developing my own project) - income went up by 30%. Don't undercut yourself - you may as well be a wage-slave if you do that. 60-hour weeks area mug's game - I'd rather dig holes for peanuts than die in a cubicle of a stress-induced fat-attack.

  • Drive image/restore recommendation. [modified]
    D DontSailBackwards

Acronis (spelling is wrong in other post) True Image will do this. You can create a boot CD and restore and image from an external HDD or create a bootable restoration DVD. I've used it for a while & it has been good (reliable) to me. Compression is pretty good and it's pretty quick, although a bit slower when compression is set to max. It's one of those things that may have freebie alternatives but it is worth paying for, IMHO.

  • Bug Tracker Project Manager All in One Wonder Package no coding required

Google can also search these discussions. In the Google search box type bug track site:codeproject.com or variations of this. 5 minutes or so of this could have landed some links to previous discussions right here in this forum. I will, however concede that you have a valid point. Also another point it that initiating a fresh discussions will return more up-to-date opinions options. Personally, I'm a big fan of Mantis. BugTracker.NET looks good - the only reason I didn't go with it is that my host is PHP & MySQL. If that ever changes then ... I'll be back. By the way, I think your site lends you a lot of cred - it's good to see an honest comparisons and links , a developer who doesn't try to pretend their product is the only option. I also agree with Google page rankings - my page (www.CADbloke.com[^]) comes top of the list and my product contains exactly zero lines of code. No bugs! I wonder where my old lava lamp went? Oh that's right - I left it back in the 90's.

  • UPS recommendations
    D DontSailBackwards

I've had a couple of APC Back UPS ES 500's running for a few years now with nary a problem, except when I plugged too much into them. It didn't return any errors or beep at me but it tripped and reset itself. I thought it was a power supply fault until I looked at meter in APC's PowerChute software. Oops. Got a bigger one to replace it. Had a lightning strike on the power pole just outside the window (7 metres / 20 feet) & everything survived, except for the laptop's video card (NVidia Quadro - thank Gawd for on-site warranties) but I think that was more to do with the EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) than any power surge cos the laptop is behind both the UPS surge-protection and its own AC-DC converter. I had to reset/reboot (EMP again, I think) everything but it all came back ok. Yes, it was loud.

  • Recommendations on Issue Tracker that is integrated into Subversion
    D DontSailBackwards

I use Mantis Bug Tracker. It does run on PHP (which can run on Windows very easily and is a language worth learning, not that you need to) and apparently can use MS-SQL . It's open source and easier to use than something like Bugzilla. There are quite a few plug ins and at least one or 2 for Subversion. Have a look at scmbug. I looked at a few others over a month or 2 (just recently) but they were generally unfriendly to use and/or eerily under-represented in the user & developer stakes. Eventum by the MySQL mob looked pretty good but was too complicated for my needs. The Bug Genie was nice looking but not quite there. FlySpray is also worth a look at but I didn't go with that either My requirements were more end-user bug entry so mine has to make sense to the uninitiated. If you're keeping it all amongst developers then Bugzilla is generally the open-source industry standard. FogBugz got mentioned all the time in my wanderings around the net and is apparently well-regarded. I didn't quite get the pricing - it looked horribly expensive if you wanted to let all your users report a bug - someone correct me if I've got that wrong & I'll take another look into it.

  • Monitor size?
    D DontSailBackwards

2x 20" (1600x1200) HP LCDs on the desktop. Laptop is 17" 1920x1200 plus a 19" at 1280,1024. Different coloured mice help me find the right cursor when they're side-by-side. I also do AutoCAD on these computers so that matters too. It's definitely a plus to be able to see more without scrolling. I agree with a post above - pixel count matters more than size. Also, with small pixels & small text, when it gets blurry then you're too tired - go to bed! It's a shame my Quadro will only drive 1 of the HP 30-inch displays - 2 of them would be sweet! Did someone say "SLI" ?

    D DontSailBackwards

Sounds similar to an issue I had. It turned out to be the power supply - not enough juice, particularly when the video card etc. start working harder, as they would with the right drivers. In particular, have you added anything else recently ... a HDD perhaps. o it could just be old. My PC's power consumption went up by 75 watts when I replaced the PS with one that was more capable. Never had another BSOD since. It just wasn't up to the task.
