it's just an expensive (and too locked in) model for my tastes

I recently visited the VSLive! conference in Vegas, and Azure was pushed excessively indeed. Although I must say I was very intrigued by it's features and the ease of deploying applications to the web will become. And I do find the pricing model very attractive, since you're only paying for what you use. Also: you can host entire VM's through azure, so you're not completely 'locked in'. Look into it, it's really worth it I think. Generally speaking I think that everything is moving to the web. One way or another, I think applications hosted in a cloud environment will have the future, regardless of technique. As for the question asked: I'm currently developing an 'old-school' ASP.Net Webforms application, while NOT using jQuery (yes some people actually still write classic JavaScript and use AJAX lol) in an MVP programming model, through an ADO.Net datalayer. We're currently just finishing what was on the shelves for years, and next year we're all moving our stuff to Azure, using the latest technology (i.e. MVC and Entity Framework).

  • WCF Bindings overview table
    E Eaverae

Hi everyone, I'm currently busy with preparing for the 70-513 MCPD exam, and learning how to use WCF. In my study I created an overview of all the out-of-the-box bindings for WCF. Can you guys please review this overview, and give me some pointers if the overview isn't sufficient enough? Thanks in advance! The overview table is posted right here: http://eaverae.nl/wcftable.html[^] EDIT (07/16/2012): Finished the final version of the table (same location) and passed the exam 723/1000 :)

Thought I'd share this, 'cause I'm just too exited :) Anyway, I think it's always a bold move to quit your current job and then write the best code you've ever written :) Stabs 'em in the back a little, doesn't it? No arguing with that. It is a shame the phone didn't have something like satnav on there. That was a bit of a disappointment to me as well. Especially when you think they built a special 'find' button as one of the three WP7 control buttons!

I think WP7 is pretty cool; Although not all functionality is available in my country (the Netherlands), it's very fast and easy to use. I myself come from windows mobile 6.5 (which I mainly used for it's excellent integration with exchange), but with WP7 it's even better (a lot of 'other' accounts are connected very easy (think: facebook, windows live, google). Also one of the features of WP7 which isn't mentioned anywhere is that all pictures you take with the camera, can be uploaded directly to your Windows Live SkyDrive account. Therefore, you can erase all of your pictures, but still have the images available to you on the net (although, I haven't found out how to stream them back to the phone). Xbox Live and the Marketplace will be released somewhere in 2011, and then I hope to really unlock all of the power that the superb hardware holds. On a scale of 1 - 10 WP7 scores a decent 8, and that will be a 9 when xbox live and the marketplace are released. Hope this helps ;)

  • Would a Game dev degree be worth it?
    E Eaverae

I'd stick with Computer Science; I graduated a 'game developer' study, and I am still feeling the 'pain'. In this case it's just the title that hurts. I am not writing games in anyway, nor do I work at a game development company. Currently I am working on web applications (mostly asp.net), but when I first applied for the job, there was some excessive frowning when I said I had actual development experience in that area. Once you make the decision to make the bold move and work as a game developer, I strongly recommend taking some math classes, and really focus your coding to be more and more technical. Also, some experience with creating 3d animations with tools such as 3ds max and maya (does this still exist?) will really help I imagine. Because, let's be honest. Flash games are going down the tube in a few years. Hope this helps!

  • How to get selected node in a XML with childnodes and childnodes' childnodes?
    E Eaverae

System.Xml has a method SelectSingleNode, which requires an xPath expression in order to work. Your method should look somewhat like the following:

    Sub GetSelected(string _PN, string_ DN)

' Put some code here to read your XML document into a XMLDocument variable,
    ' called XDoc for instance.

    XmlNode _XN = XDoc.SelectSingleNode("/Height/Standard/" + _PN + "/A")

    End Sub

(yes, I'm not a hero in vb, 5 pts if you guess my 'dialect'). Hope this steers you in the right direction!
