Hmm, real world...work - dual quad xeon 6gb ram, 15k sas disk. home - hyperthreaded quad i7, 6 gb ram, 256 ssd (Samsung that came with dell studio xps 16). Let me put it this way, the laptop makes my bad a' work computer look like a rock, while the laptops a jet. Both use win7x64 and multiple visual studio's open at a single time, with outlook 2010. The laptop is literally instantaneous, it's dumbfounding fast. Best bang, use the SSD for the os disk with your programs and everything on it. Use a slower disk for storing data. But it also depends on what your doing as well.

That is one thing I miss about VB. I always prefered the End If/While/Function/Sub stuff instead of }. Makes it easier to see, yes, this code was an if statement, this was a while loop, etc. At least VS highlights the opening brace though. But that being said, I prefer c#, case sensitivity is actually nice when knowing where a variable was defined if you always follow a programming standard, variables starting with _ are global, lower case are defined in the method, and capitals are always the name of the method. At least, thats the way we do it here.

I use the local system account for all of my scheduled tasks, unless it does stuff on a network share...which none of mine do. I find using a user account to be less than reliable (at least on anything older then Vista). That would dump 4 password changes. I have many, many tasks running as the local system. start->run->cmd->ok at /every:sunday,monday,tuesday,wednesday,thursday,friday,saturday ""

  • What is the quality of a good tip?
    E ecooke

Depends on how cute she is, if she's not, or its a dude, then i usually do 20-25 depending on the service. ;) Also depends on how much the meal was, but generally no less that a couple of bucks. And never less that 20%, unless the service was horrible. But I've been known to do up to 50% on some meals. And we are talking about meals right? I can think of other services that you tip.

  • LAMP vs .NET
    E ecooke

I completely dissagree with that entire statement. I manage both Windows and Linux servers and as long as your I.T. group is a competent group, then your Windows boxes can have the same uptime as your Linux boxes. The only time we ever reboot both the Windows and the Linux boxes is when doing updates. The only problem with the websites, and this affects both Windows and Linux, is the quality of the code. You code crap in .net, the site sucks, you code crap in PHP, the site sucks. Code well in .NET and the site rocks, code well in PHP, the site rocks. I code in .NET because well, I'm not that great in PHP, I can fix stuff, but thats my limit. Where as in .NET, I can write huge apps that perform very well. In my opinion, at the current time, Silverlight is the leader when doing LOB apps on the intranet, because it was designed from the beginning for applications, and flash is the leader on the internet becuase it was designed originally to display pretty graphics. On the other hand though, there are some things that are done better with Linux than with Windows. Intrusion Prevention is one very good example. BTW, Linux and Windows is an OS. Not a server. :)

  • Consulting/hourly rates
    E ecooke

One client for my consulting side work, I charge 50 an hour, and not for everything. Reason being, they would go out of business and then I wouldn't get anything, not to mention that it's also a hobby, and it's just play money. My primary day job covers everything. So we discuss what they can afford, and we go from there. I manage all of their servers/software and do programming work for them as well.

  • Apparently MS are out to get you...
    E ecooke

He's an idiot. I have a mixed environment of both opensource (CentOS/Gentoo) and Windows (2003/2008). They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Updates for Windows, generally awesome, updates for Linux, pain. Uptime of server, Windows - generally good, can go about 90 days on a single boot, but thats because of 3rd party software, a base MS system, well, Had one up for 183 days, had to turn it off because I decided to put in another hard drive. And the same goes for Linux. Windows setup/configure - easy, Linux - pain. But hey, alot of people like it because its whole lot cheaper. And PHP/Perl is alot easier to get going reliably on linux then windows. But these are just my experiences.

  • Easy way to share big files...
    E ecooke

You already have an ftpserver, so I would go with a webserver, IIS or apache. I prefer IIS, a bit easier to set up (in my opinion). If needed you could put it on a different port. Some ISP's block certain ports. You can even put password protection, and best of all, it stays within your organization. Is your upload really 2 megabytes and not megabits? 2MB is pretty fast, and putting 200-500MB files should download fairly quickly. 2MB=2048KB, 2mb=256KB. You could also probably go for an offsite hosted server, rackspace is realtively cheap depending on where you go, and you could get a basic server to do this for way cheap. It also allows you to run over to that server and use a thumb drive to put the files on it. Here's basic pro's and cons of doing it this way Pro's Flexibility to do what you want, Unlimited storage, Bandwidth (depending on the hosting site) Keeps relying on 3rd parties down Static IP Ability to use some kind of removable media to copy data Cons, Cost, It's up to you to setup/maintain the server. (win 2003 and iis6 is ridiculously easy with automatic updates) It's up to you to implement security. For a single server, using the built in windows firewall might be acceptable. It's up to you to do redundancy if you want it.

Nope, I just randomly place things on it all over the place, with decent names, then click somewhere on the desktop and start typing the name. Placing them in a specific spot doesn't matter, the company wallpaper...well I would rather them use http://www.boingboing.net/images/snakes-white-big.jpg[^. Can't see anything on the desktop when it's all "pretty". At home, their's nothing on the desktop except for a few shortcuts.
