Good points. I don't completely disagree with you, but I certainly believe that the dangers of government control to prevent monopolies are greater than letting a few ides get passed over because no one really thought they were all that great. I used to think the Amiga was great, and was convinced I'd never want a PC. But there wasn't anything so wonderful about the structure of the Amiga that kept new PC developments from beating it out, and Commodore's failure to market it well led to their demise. This leads to one of our points of agreement. The market requires "salesmanship", not just a good product. I don't particularly like that, but I'd certainly rather have that than more government regulations that could affect us in many more bad ways than a few nice products being passed over. It's a similar thing with the Borland/Watcom/Symantec/Visual C++ contest. Sure, MS may have been doing internal stuff to produce a better version of the compiler and IDE. However, that didn't keep Borland from doing well with its other languages. Nor did it keep any of the other companies from developing completely separate improvements that would have made their products dominant. The only true "leg up" that MS has when it comes to customers, is the tremendous amount of marketing power. As far as development goes, it has been clear for a while that MS often enjoys improving their products through great ideas _someone else_ came up with. To answer your last question. No, I don't think the market is always right. But, I do think that the end result is very rarely harmful in any way -- much less harmful that government regulations would be. John

The easy way is that if the bikes travel at 10MPH, they meet in 1 hour. Since the fly travels at 15MPH, it travels a total of 15 miles. The hard way is to notice that the fly is flying a series of trips, each shorter than the last. In math terms, this is an infinite series. You formulate the equations, set the variables based on the speed and distances. The result is a geometric series. The equations for a geometric series are somewhat standard, and when you plug in the values, sure enough the sum is 15 miles. Decades ago, Readers Digest published this puzzle. A student read it and shortly later spoke with Von Neumann at a cocktail party. He posed the problem to him. Von Neumann thought for a second or two and said 15 miles. The student responded that most mathematicians did not solve it the easy way, but sought the infinite series approach. Von Neumann quickly interrupted him, and said something like "Yes, and the equation is xxx, the terms are yyy, and the result is 15 miles. What is your point?". BUT.... if the jailer had come to you and (honestly) said, "it's not you", then your chances would be 0%. The fact that he's eliminating one of the other guys means that there's only one of two possibilities left: 50%. So the jailer has indeed given you new information: it's either you or one more other guy (50%), whereas before that you thought it was you or one of the two other guys (33%). So, from "your" standpoint, the jailer's information just increased your changes of dying to 50%. Think about it, wouldn't you feel the same if this happened to you? Of course, there's also the issue of trust. If you don't trust the jailer (which I probably wouldn't), then your changes continue being 33%. Regards, Alvaro
