Seriously, with all the hell you guys go through that basically amounts to paperwork, how do you get any work done?

Thumbs up on that statement above! Kinar: We work the same way as you do here. We are the web team department in our company with 11 people (4 .net developers, 3 flex devs, 4 content specialists). We don't check in code until it makes it out to the live web site. We have a very old version of VSS 6.0, but it works for our needs since it's just the 7 of us (the flex devs also work with our .net code on occassion). Maybe it's just that we don't have a very complex dev cycle here on our web team, but the way we've been doing things has worked for us for many many years. I see files in our VSS from 2001. I think the flex devs have been trying to move to SVN, but all I hear are problems with checking out the branch, trunk, boxers and briefs. Must be a learning curve thing. Anyway, I feel the way we do things works fine. I suppose the other commenter is right; I guess we only work on simple things! We are simple people.

Office Communicator works fine for us too. Whenever I go home and hop on MSN Messenger, the ads really annoy me. I'm glad they made an enterprise product too.

  • You know you need a break when...
    E envador

You know you need a break when... I have a bunch of sticky notes stuck around the bezel of my LCD monitors here at work. One of them had our company's mailing address written on it. I tried twice to move my mouse pointer onto the sticky note so I could copy/paste it when I realized what I was attempting was impossible!

  • Donationware - does it work?
    E envador

I wrote a program called OWANotify for myself and decided to make it freeware a few years ago. On my website I ask for donations; I get $5, $10 donations every now and then. Sometimes a very grateful IT manager comes along and drops a nice fat $50+ donation. Those are rare though. I think if I was after just praise, then I'd put a guestbook on my webpage and let the recognition roll in. However, it's nice to have some money in the paypal account to buy some random nick-knack led flashlight online every now and then.

  • Coffee Alternatives, not Caffeine Alternatives...
    E envador

So the problem is you're not getting a good night's sleep, you're sleepy during the day and need the caffeine to keep you awake. Maybe you can attack this problem from two directions... I started exercising on a regular basis this January and have been getting great sleep because of it. I eat whatever junk food / fast food lunch I want during the day, but for dinner I eat light and healthy. Or maybe you need a better bed. Anyway, a better night's sleep will reduce your need for caffeine during the day.. and your body will thank you for better overall health. Better sleep + less caffeine = happier stomach!

  • Why is ASP so SLOW?! [modified]
    E envador

The argument of a asp.net site's traffic level being inversely proportional to the site's performace (ie, the higher the traffic, the slower it 'feels') has been mentioned a few times in this thread already. ... But there's also another thing to consider -- unless you change the default setting in IIS, it will actually unload your asp.net site from the server's application pool after 'x' minutes of site inactivity. So the next time someone comes to your asp.net site, it will take a little extra time to load as it starts up the process again. Some less-frequented sites suffer from slow 1st load time because of this. Long time lurker; first post; please be kind!
