meaning across seperate borders. Chinese I believe dominates language on a per person basis, but outside of china I think it's far more rare. Where english is across many many borders.

The problem isn't english, the problem is your country is reliant on technology that was developed by english speaking people. So I guess your real solution is design a computer system using software based on your own language rather than building on one that is foreign to you. Then you'd have no problems. Likely, if the nations did get together to "invent a language" it would be based on the most commonly spoken language, which I believe is english. So you probably would lose either way. Best thing that could be done is everyone just accept a certain language and start teaching that language early in schools.

The stakes are certainly less risky for programming, but the point nevertheless stands.

I beg to differ, computer programs are FAR more risky than bridge builders, etc. While a bridge may fall down, it will likely only kill a few hundred people max. But imagine if a computer program accidently tagged thousands of innocent americans as terrorists or something. Or if the computer system running all of our airplanes became infected with a virus causing all planes to go haywire. It would be tough for a bridge builder to do that kind of damage if they tried. ;)

Given that quad-core chips and 1GB memory are going to be standard desktop equipment in next to no time "bloat" is not really an issue.

Oh so naive. I remember when I went from a 400 mb hard drive to 1.6 gb. I knew then that I was going to be set for the rest of my life. 6 months later mp3's hit and 1.6 gigs was absolutely inadequate. So I went up to 15 gb's in the late 90's. Surely that is enough space, until 1 gb hard drive space consuming video games hit the market....I am now running a mirrored 120 gb harddrive for my media and games, which I built last year mind you, and it's full. Next I will be an absolutely temporary 250 gb mirror. :sigh: The moral, "bloat" will not go away because of hardware advancement unless software makers do something about it.

  • Being a rock star programmer
    G glitch177k

I'm not sure that counts as a ROCK star programmer. I mean, rock is all about being loud and a little bit crazy. So pristine perfect code doesn't seem very rock n roll to me.... And I'm pretty sure to be a rock star programmer you would have to code in all caps to emphasize the loudness. And a punk rock programmer would be all about the open source "do it yourself" languages. I could go on all day with this stuff.... ;)

  • Storage technology of the future
    G glitch177k

My best solution was to buy two 250 gb harddrives and a motherboard with serial ata. I then mirrored the harddrives and stored my data there. That way, if one goes down, you have the other. Plus you can swap them out as technology advances and just ghost from the old to the new ones (Keep your OS on your normal harddrive as to not help crash the important data). I would NEVER keep all of your important data on one format though. Luckily it is much easier to move data around these days. If you bought a dvd burner you could minimize the number of discs you have laying around. But I would still start with a really big hard drive. Two copies for very little effort is well worth it. And many newer motherboards have serial ata with mirroring capability built in.

  • Can we make a deal?
    G glitch177k

I think he's referring to being considerate to those who can't, for some ungodly reason, see it opening weekend. You know, give them a couple weeks and don't ruin it. I'm sure many will see it within the weekend it comes out, despite the fact that many thought less of the 2nd one. Likes flies to the bug zapper we hand over our 50 bucks (movie passes for 2, popcorn and soda) though our previous experience said it was a bad idea. :) If a picture is worth a thousand words, the average word is worth 7 letters, and a letter is equal to about 10 pixels, how many photos could I trade in for one of those fancy flat monitors?
