  • When is a backup not a backup?
    H hevisko

Since the late '90s, I've had: Hendrik's rules of computing: 1) Make a backup 2) Make *ANOTHER* backup 2b) at least one off provider 3) *CHECK* those backups. horror stories of backups made, and then the DR/BCD site can't read the backup tapes (too old tech), or tar block sizes that wasn't standard/default/fixed, to scraping thesis of stiffies/floppies, And then when/where I had the backups in place, restoring without a beat/sweat when things gone bad

  • Sick of 2FA
    H hevisko

Even Banks lately ASSUMES an Adroid/iOS device to run their "MoneyApp" to do stuff, I rocked up with a MobiCell, they had to go fetch them old card re-encoder from the back room to assist me after I threw my toys all over their support lines. Back to 2FA: I got to love BitWarden (1Password apparently also) as it include the TOTP (google auth) thus I have less to type/search/etc. and best of all: As I have BitWarden "everywhere" (after my password - long one and only pass I remember :D ) I don't worry about them phones getting lost/stolen anymore

    H hevisko

I've been using a (local ) ZA company called Frikkadel Portal Home - Frikkadel.co.za[^] for most of my domains, as they are friendly etc. and mostly cheaper than the rest - okay, never needed to call, but the support had been great thus far! OF domains they don't have/support, I've been using ovh.ie ... except the .ga domain I have going through another freenom registrar.. but that's a play domain for me :)=)

that's a new term, I always knew those as "Off-line" ie. they don't draw direct power from the utilities as they are allways "off-line" drawing from the batteries being charged at the same time... but yeah, those are the real expensive ones, especially as you need them to be true pure-sinewaves

What I want is true CD quality

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_Disc_Digital_Audio:

The standard also specifies the form of digital audio encoding (2-channel signed 16-bit Linear PCM sampled at 44,100 Hz)

When you talk about 192kbps, are you *sure* it's 192k*bps*, or a 24bit 192kHz DAC converter? True, CD quality is 704kbps (16bit*44kHz), and the 192kHz 24bit dacs are actually (suppose) to be doing 4608kbps... But to be honest: the problem with most USB DACs is the quality and price of the interanls and shielding, not really the kbps, as they start typically at 48kHz 16bit DACs (CD and better "quality") but its the other interference that needs to be "handled" that makes their sound quality poor. Also, "upsampling" isn't necessarily goining to make it sound better from 44kHz going to 192kHz

I'll refer you to HEndrik's rules of computing: 1) Make a backup 2) Make *ANOTHER* backup 3) *CHECK* those backups They are actually in *reverse* order of importance ;)

  • What OS do you use at work / home?
    H hevisko

MacOSX. Managing Linux servers for clients it does what I need: 1) easy to use interface 2) I can ssh into/from it from the moment it is installed 3) the Windows VMs on it does the bits I don't yet have native on MacOSX 4) M$ "supports" it well enough for Office & RDP stuff. 5) Most "apps" have Mac support before Linux ;( 6) I did mention: "It just work(tm)" for me.... other than when I HAckintosh things :D
