For all my life I have loved things that fly. It rubbed off on my son and he is now a bush pilot in the far north of Canada and loving his life.

I tried this a couple Windows versions ago and had nothing but pain. There were apps that didn't work and settings kept flipping back to their default location. I now blithely accept where Windows wants to put things and my machines just seem to work better.

I really like OpenSCAD - CAD for programmers. I've been able to make some pretty cool designs without a lot of difficulty.

Yeah, I picked up Arduino in earnest. I just finished installing a Google Assistant voice operated system for individually controlling the 8 recessed lights in my kids' "Game Dungeon". "Hey Google, light pattern 'front half'" will turn on the lights in the front half of the room and the back half off. I have half a dozen named patterns, but they can also be addresses with a bitwise number. "Hey Google, light pattern 162" will turn on 10100010. I had great fun and taught my kids binary.

I live in Canada and have been using metric since grade school. That being said, I still buy 2x4's for framing, and sheets of plywood come in 4x8 sheets. The crazy thing is that our plywood is often 4x8 sheet by 5mm.

  • Easter Eggs
    H Hooga Booga

I've put in a couple over the years. The one I liked best was every 17th time the mouse hovered over a certain small icon, the icon image would briefly change from the finger pointer to a middle finger pointer. QA saw it on the first day but couldn't reproduce it. He came laughing to my office and asked if he saw what he thought he did. I believe we took it out. I spent a lot of time making that image!

  • What is the status of report generation these days?
    H Hooga Booga

I built a data warehouse and taught my users Excel Pivot Tables. Once they get it, I am never bothered for reports again. For ad-hoc queries, this is great. I use SSRS for pre-defined reports. It is so easy to use, to update and deploy reports.

  • Who is afraid of regex?
    H Hooga Booga

I enjoyed the series right up until they were able to insert a little card into their existing engine that allowed them to travel anywhere immediately. I know that FTL is imaginary, but I'd think that "blink" might have required a completely different set of physics requiring a new engine or something. My "willing suspension of disbelief" became unwilling at that point.
