This mainly comes down to load tests (100%, for 24 hours a day, for 2 weeks) e.g. memory leaks. totally agree, we've some code here and when you look at it your first thought is that this is complete crap but when you think about it, it makes sense. If you were to change it you cant be sure what your going to break and only find out what is broken on a complete system test with 15 apps all going hammer and tongs at you. I know how you feel, when I first started into the pc gaming a year ago one card seemed the same as the others (suppose this is the nice thing about consoles) but after a while you start to pick up on a few things. Also it comes down to the games, some are better supported on ATI, other NVidia e.g shader 3 is not on ATI cards but is on nvidia (or is it the other way round :~ ) but ATI are better at opengl at the minute..... A medium range card is ok, its only when your big into a specific game that you try to match the card to it (which is stupid) that and the willy shaking contests. Make sure it fits your main board (if your gc is old I presuming your mobo wouldn't be the newest either, could be wrong), I tried doing this once and found that the end of the gc was overlapping with the power supply connection to the main board, wouldn't even sit into the slot (only one PCI-E slot on it). I had a radeon X850 Pro 256M (again PCI-E, but you can get AGP) and worked alright for FEAR (which is fairly intense on min specs), can then use ATITool to over clock it (and on some versions you can reflash the card to open up 4 more pipes, X850 has 12 by default), seems to have descent reviews....I put another gig of ram on mine an it does help but again its all down to the wonga...... Try 3DMark05 (or 06 if you really want to get depressed) and check your scores on their site.... in saying that I just installed an Nvidia 7800 GTX (seriously concidering going duali sli) Imp. Howdi Howdi, Windows (XP) took a digital turd on me last night :doh: and has to reinstall (bsod everytime at boot), had a recovery partition but when booting to the recovery cd I was told the recovery was not for the same version of windows :confused: (couldn't be arsed figuring out why). Back up and running again with a few recovery points taken but still not convinced I can recover from the rescue points. To be honest it didn't really bother me, took 30 minutes to install and another hour for sound/graphics card, firewall, antivirus etc. So my question is this, can ye recommend a few disk backup tools (e.g. Norton Ghost) but freeware/opensource i.e. create an image of the hd to a dvd and boot disk (usb stick) and if things go south again just boot to the usb and restore the complete drive from the dvd, reboot and wayha don't install that thing again:rolleyes:. Not sure, graphic drivers?, I duno but I've both a (local) unix & pc workstation, launch same gui on them and the redraws as slower on unix. I'de put it down to bad testing (maybe incomplete testing is more appropriate).....anyway I hate gui's X| (coding them that is), they can do exactly what they are supposed to but someone can come back and say they don't like the way the left side of the gui is lain out. I'll stick to the server side components for the time being, ta very much.....

And the GUI's run faster on Win than Unix which strikes me a funny!

The factory isn't actually that big, if they are to buy them it'id be nice if they kept the assembly & support here (Athlone), their the second best think to come out of it ;P

hi guys, Can any of you recommend a good (free) dvd recovery tool. I had a 5G file so I split it into 5 parts (using winzip), 4 of them onto disk1 then the last part onto disk2 which had a previous open session on it. But now I can't read disk2. I've tried IsoBuster and its showing up something alright (the file names are not the same) but I need to register to use the extract stuff. I've tried a few others but no luck. (the disks were burnt with CDBurnerXP Pro 3, never had any problems with it before..... Thanks in advance........
