  • 30 day notice given - shape up or ship out
    J James Hendrix

Sorry for taking so long in replying. I wanted to wait and see what was going to happen. The 30 days came and went - no word from my manager, which is her typical way of doing things. In the meantime, I was sending out resumes and interviewing as I did not want to be out of work. When the question came as to why I wanted to leave, I gave them the honest answer, that I could not connect with my manager. If they pressed for details, I would explain that her management style was "fear-management" and that her decisions were made based on her emotions for the moment. Everyone seemed to accecpt the answers. And I am happy to say I was made a very nice offer from a software development company and took the offer. Thanks to all for the advice and tips.

  • 30 day notice given - shape up or ship out
    J James Hendrix

I've been in the IT industry for 26 years. Over that time, I have had some really good managers and a few not so good. However, I was always able to adapt to the not so good ones and kept going. Now I am in a situation where my manager and I have never connected. The manager is by far the most unusual and the manangement style is what I call "fear management" - fear of losing your job on an almost daily basis. I was just told I have 30 days to make the recommended changes or I am out of a job. I have not been able to meet this manager's expectations and I feel it's time to look elsewhere. My concern is when I start interviewing, how do I handle the question that will always come up: Why are you wanting to leave your current employer? I have always been told to never bad mouth or say anything negative about youor current manager during the interview process, but I am really stuck on this one. Any advice?

  • What was the absolute worst programming job and why?
    J James Hendrix

I was in shock when I found out she was going to be in charge of that project. And of course, with her being the HR person, really had no where else to turn. After I left, things got much better for me (salary and working conditions).

  • What was the absolute worst programming job and why?
    J James Hendrix

It started out as a good job, creating web apps with PHP. After I completed the first major project, they decided to make the HR lady the project manager on the 2nd major project. The HR lady had no clue to programing, workflow or anything close to application development. Her concern was to make it look "pretty" first and then worry about the data intergration. We had conflicts on a daily basis and in three weeks, I was given my walking papers. She sucked!

  • Why would you read a book !
    J James Hendrix

"A friend of mine was arguing that nowadays you can find all the information online, why would somebody buy a book ? He also claims that, printing will be dead in 10 years" I work at the largest library in our area (with 13 branches) and we keep setting records of people checking out books each month. We receive boxes of new books each day and keep ordering new ones all the time. I do not see any trend of decline in book printing. Just the opposite.

  • Salary History
    J James Hendrix

Asking for 20 years of salary history seems kinda silly. If I go back 20 years, my salary was around $26,000. I see no value in that for today's salary ranges. If I list out the one's I can think of, it would look like: $26,000 $38,000 - moved to California $42,000 $110,000 - dot com era $40,000 - dot com bust $42,000 $60,000 When ever I got a big raise, it was because I changed jobs. Most of the placed I was at had a pay range between 2.5 to 3.0% - not much of a raise.
