I've got one of these. [Asus Laptop] Downside; it's heavy and the battery only lasts about an hour. Upside; 6 gigs of ram, quad core processor, dual hard drives, blu-ray, vga and hdmi outputs, reasonable price.

Unlocking your cell phoneDon't have any info on that, sorry.
-
Unlocking your cell phoneAT&T unlocked both mine and my daughters cell phones last summer with no problems. Had to provide the IMEI number and they emailed us when the unlocking was complete. We then purchased sim cards at the car phone warehouse in London and they worked perfectly. I think we were getting a 10p per minute rate to the US versus the $2+ a minute AT&T international roaming rate.

Kick in the head!Man what a month (or actually a period of 30 or so days)! Girlfriend broke up with me and now today I just got laid off out of the blue. Sure am glad that I don't have a dog, if I did his days would very likely be numbered! ;) BLAH! Thanks for letting me vent a bit.

What was your first computer?Ah those were the days. I bought a Commodore Vic-20 when I was 13. An amazing 5k of ram came standard. Also had the 24k ram upgrade cartridge! Data storage was handled with a cassette recorder and a little interface box, horribly unreliable. The thing plugged into a TV for the monitor so I used a little 13" portable. Spent lot's of hours typing basic code into that thing. Eventually moved up to the Commodore 64 with a big clunky external 5 1/4" external floppy drive. Programmed alot on the Apple II's at school as well. Used my first PC in 1985 while in the army, not sure what it was though. I remember it had dual 5 1/4" floppies, no hard drive and a Bausch & Lomb plotter that had a mechanical arm which you inserted a marker into to print charts from Lotus 123. I still have a DOS 2.11 disk laying around somewhere. Memories ... hehe.

anyone ever started a company (legally/officially... blah blah blah)?Yes, I've started a company, had my own S-Corp doing consulting for the last 3 years. The economy forced me back into the full-time employee world in December of 2001 and I was grateful to get the job! Do you have a specific question? Jon

about select function in unix socket programmingIf you've got the time and money head over to Amazon.com or your computer book reseller of choice and look for books by Richard Stevens. He wrote what are considered by many, the definitive reference books on Sockets and Unix. I know they saved me when I had to do some socket coding on an IBM RS6000 with AIX 4.3 Good Luck!

I *LOVE* ADSLCable is better? It's cheaper than a decent DSL connection, but in what world is cable better? I've had both and as soon as enough people in your neighborhood catch on and get it too, you're left with an almost unusable connection at the prime times of the day. It got so bad where I lived during the day that dial-up was faster until about 3 in the morning. Plus I don't know of a single cable provider that allows you to run any servers on the cable connection. Most of them are blocking all pertinent ports. Go to a "geek" friendly DSL Provider like Speakeasy.net in the states and you not only have a quality of service agreement on your connection speed but also the ability to use your bandwidth for whatever purpose you desire. That includes running mail, ftp, web and dsn servers. Just my 2 cents! :)
