When using DataSets, try designing a strongly-typed DataSet by using the DataSet designer in VS.NET (there are other ways and tools, too, but I present the way in VS.NET). Right-click on your project or subfolder and select Add New Item. Find DataSet, give it a name, and click OK. You'll see a component designer screen. Right-click to add elements (tables) and each element has rows and their types (the columns). You can even add relationships and primary keys. Just play around with it a little. You can even use the Server Explorer if you have a database connection to drag-n-drop tables or stored procedures which returns tables to generate these automatically. When you fill the strongly-typed DataSet, your DbDataAdapter derivative (like SqlDataAdapter) has to be configured to map the tables. This is done through DbDataAdapter.TableMappings and can easily be configured by using the data adapter designer in VS.NET as well. Finally, you don't even need to use strongly-typed if you use the TableMappings property mentioned above. When selecting multiple result sets, the sequence of table names is "Table", "Table1", "Table2", etc. If you map these to other names, you can use DataSet.Tables["_nameOfTable_"]. I recommend using strongly-typed DataSets, though. I found out on MSDN that when drag dropping a control Visual Studio doesn't automatically create the declaration in the Code behind file. In fact if our control is called UserControl1 and is has a public property called StringProperty we cannot access it by default by calling UserControl1.StringProperty = "hello"; On MSDN they say to add protected UserControl UserControl1; Done this and accessing the control works. Anyway I still haven initialized my constructor. If I modify my declaration to protected UserControl UserControl1 = new UserControl(ab1, ab2, ab3....) I still receive the error no overloaded method for UserControl takes 0 parameters. I used a workaround of declaring a property and assigning it to the value I want on the Page_Load in my case works but there must be a proper way to do this. Edd

For an ASP.NET application the OS and SQL server licencing are per processor as I understand it. You do not need to account for every surfer that visits your site. You really need to understand how your ASP.NET application will be used. Mainly, how many hits is it likely to receive? (or how many times are DB queries going to be run) How complex is each query? (The more complex the longer it takes, the longer a user has to wait, the quicker a backlog builds up if there is high demand) For instance a preliminary study, for a project my company is undertaking, I had to to work out how much stress the server, database and connection would be given a certain condition (All users wanting access to their information on the same day). From that we could work out how much data will be transferred, how many queries will be performed, and from an estimate of the amount of processing required per request we could work out what hardware was needed and the licences to support it. (e.g. If you have a XEON processor you need to purchace a 2 processor license for SQL Server [because a XEON is two P4s in one package]) I hope this helps guide you to your answer. Even comprimising your SQL Server system would not yield the password if using a digest algorithm like MD5 or SHA1 without using a brute force attack. You make a good point about avoid such an attack, though. Encrypting the ticket is definitely a good idea. Take a look at my article Role-based Security with Forms Authentication[^] for a brief mention of using FormsAuthentication.Encrypt to encrypt a forms authentication-based ticket. Doing this manually would work as well, but I thought I'd just mention it. As far as using a salted hash, storing the salt makes your system little more secure than the first method of using an unsalted hash. If a cracker comprimised your system, nothing is stopping them from discovering the hash. The MD5-digest authentication mechanisms that many HTTP daemons support - as well as many browsers - actually generate a salt of sorts that it communicates with the browser (handshaking) and they use that to digest the credentials. Unfortunately, you can't do that because you need your salt to be persistent. So, instead of storing the salt in the SQL Server, what about storing it in a different medium? You could, for example, keep an XML document (or even a simple text file) up-to-date with users and salts and read that into memory (use ASP.NET's Cache - if applicable - for some good event-based page validation). If a user comprimised the SQL Server, that cracker would have to comprise the entire system as well so that they could - most likely - gain debugging rights in order to insert their code into the ASP.NET worker process space and read the memory directly. Well, firstly you can use the SQL Aggregation functions MIN and MAX on the columns... i.e. SELECT MAX(xCord) FROM Coords. If you want to tie it into one query you'll probably have to start using sub-queries. Performance wise, I'm not sure how you'll optimise it. Thanks for the hint, I was pretty sure that there was something wron, even if it actually worked! :( But it seems that now I have a problem that I don't know how to solve. I have a class Display that I use to perform all the stuff related to the display, that actually is my control box. For example I need this class because it keeps track whether when the user pushed a button he's beginning a new number or adding a digit to the number currently onscreen. Things like that. The problem is that I don't know how to access the control that is on the form. You know they are in two different classes. I don't think there is a quick answer to your question, but I'd be willing to dialog with you about it for a while and share with you my techniques dealing with normalized databases. Beware though, I don't use a lot of what ADO.NET provides--instead, I tend to code client or server side SQL directly, depending on the requirements. That said, it seems that ADO.NET can handle relationships between tables, as long as you tell it what those relationships are, and it should handle updating records correctly (I think. I've never tried this). [personal comment--I've never used this feature because I think it is really stupid to duplicate the database model in the code: what if you want to change the DB model?] Also, have you set up foreign keys so that deletes and updates are cascaded? This can save you a lot of programming time. Also, if you can provide some specific examples of what you are trying to do, it might be easier to consider what the different solutions are and their benefits/drawbacks. Finally, hierarchical architectures are a PITA. Since you seem to only have a three level hierarchy, I think the best thing to do is to deal with the individual insert/update/delete/select statements. What you are seeing is that all the work is being done on one thread, including all the waiting that you have to do while you wait for the webservice to respond. The solution is to use an Async method or a separate thread. The Async method will use a separate thread but it takes care of all the work for you; while you have to do all the work to use a thread yourself. If I remember correctly the code that the "Add Web Reference" option generates includes some Async methods. The Async methods begin with Begin and End followed by the name of the method.
