  • Open Letter to All IT Recruiting Agencies
    L Lee Humphries

There are those who are almost human and are capable of contributing to society, through to those who are nothing but blood sucking leeches except for the fact that blood sucking leeches have a distinct medical purpose and the bottom end of 'Recruiters' don't. I have had recruiters try to stitch me and their client up at the same time. But I've also had one guy who discreetly explained to me why I didn't get the job (my surname didn't sound Indian enough - I kid you not) much to his professional embarrassment, and then when out of his way to find me something much better. The LinkedIn profile says he's in Cochin (Kochi), checking that out on Wikipedia it says it has a very long Portuguese connection. So my best guess is that he has a very Catholic name (which it is), and I'm betting his parents gave it to him. Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

  • Recommendations for video manipulation software
    L Lee Humphries

Not a programming question (mostly). I have a need for software that will let me: 1. split a video feed into individual frames (JPEG) 2. stitch individual frames back into a video feed (preferably MPEG-4) 3. allow me to change the nominal 'size' (resolution) of the video. i.e. the number of pixels. 4. Can be batch driven. Please note that in-stream editing of a video is NOT what I'm after at all, I have to be able to manipulate each individual frame and then reassemble the video from them. Any recommendations? Open Source libraries are preferred, but anything with free or reasonable licensing that isn't a total processor hog is OK too. Poldi just got the news that Harriet had died at Australia zoo (tortoise mail naturally). • DarWIN
    L Lee Humphries

Well DarWIN is going to be my new home. Currently here it is bitterly cold for the locals (around 21 degrees c), but even with the mild introductory weather you know you're in a different place. Just about every property is fenced with 1.5 to 2m high fences, but the gates aren't locked. Apparently they are to keep the ill-tempered dogs (and their owners) in and the high-velocity debris from passing cyclones out. Everyone, and I mean everyone, has a croc story. Plainly to qualify as a territorian you have to have a good (i.e. gruesome) croc story - ones about idiotic German tourists seem to be preferred. L Lee Humphries

Baah, Sick of it all. throw out most of the rules and just have the following: Vehicle must get from point A (start) to point B (finish): 1. As fast as possible. 2. Without killing anyone, destroying any property or interfering with any other teams work. 3. To qualify, the vehicle must be run exactly as it would be at the start of the race. Same amount of whatever fuel it uses, same driver, same distribution of weight etc. And I'd probably add a spending limit to stop the idiots who insist on bankrupting themselves (or others) to 'win at all cost', i.e they take that expression literally. That's it - why would you need any more rules than that?

With that kind of "state the obvious" you must be a programmer. The VMs are for testing. My question in part was whether to do the developing (ie. install VS2010) in a VM also.

That's where "OpenVMS" came from. Have you ever tried sticking a DEC Alpha on your lap? That's why the middle of it is "Open" so you can put your legs through it.

OK got myself a nice and shiny new laptop 8gb ram, 1tb hdd, some cpus (I think) and other stuff that you need. What I'm after are recommendations on how to set up the VMs, software to use, etc. for doing developy stuff (using VS2010 mainly). In other words what works for you at the moment? I won't be bothering with XP or Vista as OSes that I'll be testing on, but otherwise anything goes (pretty much).

That's pretty much true. What I was really getting at is the paranoia many people have about Malaria. Catch it early and it's no worse than a mild case of the flu, and very easily treatable assuming the medicine is available.

Yep. It's hard getting used to the idea that you can't even leave a wound for a day if you've never lived in the Tropics before. You don't get man points for having a limb chopped off (although some may disagree).
