sorry to bother you again dave. but the code works fine and gets me the data on to a datagrid. only one single LastProjectName data is returned. but when i try to get the data to a dropdownlist it does not work. how do i do this. also if there is a way by which i can get the data on a datagrid to a textbox. i mean that the datagrid displays the LastProjectName but can i get this value into a textbox. thanx and regards manik

With all due respect, but how can one be assigned to building a bookkeeping system withouth knowing (or be given time to figure out) to actually know how bookkeeping works. Such a system should be carefully planned out because there are many legislative aspects of bookkeeping, which should be implemented for it to be effective. If your getting a "syntax error", you might want to consider what the field "first" is defined as and what is in the textbox.Text. If your trying to put a string into a number field, obviously, it's not going to work. Seriously, pick up a book on SQL and VB.NET and save yourself the aggravation. You should set one datagrid to fill it from databse then u should have one insert command to get text from textbox-es to datagrid
