  • I'm not getting my Insider News emails
    M matblue25

FWIW, I started this thread a year and a half ago. In March of 2023, I got a few emails then they stopped again. I tried all kinds of things, including changing my email several times but I finally gave up. Now, suddenly, I started getting the emails again last week (June 7, 2024). I didn't change anything recently except to log on again after 9 months absence.

Hey - I got my first Daily Insider newsletter daily since a few months ago. What did you do to fix it?

Chris, Yes, this is still an issue. Still not getting the daily Insider News. Would it help if I changed to a different email address? Mark T.

About a month ago, I stopped getting my daily Insider News emails. How do I get them turned back on? When I go to sign up, it says that I'm already subscribed. They are NOT going to a spam folder or anything. As far as I can tell, they're not getting sent. Hard to believe I'm begging to get spam but I really like the Insider News. :)

I’m going to watch a few episodes and decide. What bugged me most was that episode one had no resemblance to anything from LOTR or the Silmarillion except for a few of the names.

I've been using Quicken 2012 for 10 years and haven't paid them a cent. Yeah, there's some things I have to do manually but I figured out a way to download security prices from Yahoo and convert them into a file I import into Quicken. Quicken 2012 still works fine on Windows 11. I guess I'm a tightwad (the wife agrees) but I can't see paying them $50 a year for software that does the same thing as last year's software does, at least the parts that I use.

Between the cost of memory and SSD, you might be 1/2 way to the cost of a new laptop. A buddy bought a $400 HP laptop a couple of weeks ago and it’s surprisingly responsive.

Ah - but they won't - unless someone else comes up with a different age of the universe. Distance to objects is determined by redshift. The higher the value, the further away. But it's not linear. A redshift of infinity is, by definition, at a distance in light years of the age of the universe, whatever that current value might be accepted as.

I expect the APOD people got permission from the owner. If they asked me for permission for a photo of mine, I'd sure give it. Free publicity.

You seem to be a pretty self-motivated individual. Seems like pride in doing the job right and getting it done despite indifference from the other people would be enough. Who are they to mess with your karma??

    M matblue25

Good work nonetheless. I remember one time when I responsible for a particular computer system at a customer's site. We kept have weird glitches. At one point I thought it was fixed so I took the afternoon off to golf with some of the customers. Of course, the thing crashed again while we were golfing. Fortunately, the customer rep who I reported to was in the foursome. So, at least you were on the ball and not out golfing or otherwise messing around. :)

  • Hacking gets dangerously real: 8 cybersecurity predictions to watch out for
    M matblue25

I'm thinking that #8 "Cybersecurity will matter for the CEO's bonus" will never happen or, if it does, it will be "smoke and mirrors" just like most other CEO bonus criteria. Whatever happens will be defined as success and the CEO will get the bonus. If a security incident happens, a scapegoat, other than the CEO, will be found.

  • A Charlie Brown Moment
    M matblue25

I've been using pcpartpicker.com to configure the system and, mostly been buying on Amazon because the prices are as good as or better than anywhere else (plus I have Prime). Surprisingly, BestBuy sometimes has better prices. I've used NewEgg a couple of times. I also look at microcenter.com (especially if you have a store in your town). Their prices can be kind of high but there's nothing like walking into a store with a cart and filling it up with the components you are looking for. Like a grocery store for computer parts. If you haven't built a system in a while, the CPU coolers for the latest CPUs are HUGE. Make sure you have room in your case and a couple of extra case fans to move air through it. You can use a fan-only cooler or one called an "AIO" (for "all-in-one") which is a closed-loop water cooler with a radiator, kind of like an automobile. I haven't gone the water-cooled route yet.

  • PCIe lanes
    M matblue25

There are PCIe lanes that originate from the cpu and others from the chipset. The cpu really only needs 20. The chipset can have up to 24 more. The speed of the PCIe bus has about doubled with each new version. PCIe 2.0 was 500MBs on each lane. PCIE 3.0 was just under 1000. PCIe 4.0 is just under 2000. A PCIe 3.0x4 M.2 can hit over 3000MBs. A PCIe 4.0 can do twice that. It leaves anything else in the dust, even an SSD on SATA 6Gbs (note the lower case β€œb” on the SATA spec). Most GPU processing is done on the card and sent straight to the monitor(s). All but the very expensive top end ones really only need 8 PCIe 3.0 or 4.0 lanes. Here’s an article that explains it pretty well: Guide to PCIe Lanes: How many do you need for your workload?[^] I’m not up to date on memory throughput but I would be surprised if the story there was any different. I would expect an i5-11xxx cpu with a Z590 chipset and a PCIe 4.0x4 m.2 SSD would benchmark three to five times faster than an i7-5xxx with x99 and PCIe 3.0x4 m.2.

+1 for Beyond Compare. I've been using it for years. I use it for comparing file-to-file and for synching folders. It's file copy is much faster than dragging and dropping with explorer.

  • Network driver woes
    M matblue25

You can get an el-cheapo USB WiFi adapter from Amazon for as little at $10 and a PCI 1Gb network card for not much more. That will at least get you on the internet. You said the PC was "having trouble". What was the trouble? Is the network adapter on the motherboard? Almost all motherboards these days have one.
