  • Best things to do in London
    M Matt Bishop

    1. London eye - do a night flight if you're feeling romantic. The saatchi gallery next door is fantastic if you like contempory British art (Damien Hurst et al) ... well the bits that didn't go up in the warehouse fire last month:) 2. St Pauls Cathedral - Wrens masterpiece and one of the finest in London - also in that area (off The Strand) you can walk around the inns of court where the barristers have their chambers - unspoilt and quiet with some excellent architecture (not been for a while so they may have restricted access now - you used to be able to walk through from The Strand down to the Thames). 3. If you are in Kensington then you could always go and have a look at the barriers they have put up outside the American embassy - alternatively, visit Harrods (just don't buy anything there as it is vastly over-priced (thought the cafe is reported to sell fantastic deserts...) 4. Science museam is good but at the end of the day it's probably nothing you can't get in the states - the Natural History museam next door has far more character. 5. National Gallery (and the National Portrait gallery) off Trafalgar square are both excellent - the portrait gallery is also quiet because everyone heads off to the National but still has an excellent collection. Along similar lines, the Tate, Tate modern and Victoria and Albert museam are all excellent too. The British museam is one of the best places on the planet - you could spend your whole holiday there if you're not careful! 6. The BBC proms (the biggest music festival in the world...I think:)) start towards the end of your stay. If you love music of an orchestral nature then this is a must http://www.bbc.co.uk/proms/whatson/week1.shtml[^] 7. Things to avoid IMHO, Oxford Street (unless you like crowds and having your wallet nicked), some of the bus tours are a bit of a rip-off - buy a weekly travel card for the Underground and you can use it on the normal buses too, cheaper and you can go where you want, when you want... There is so much more, the parks (hyde, green, regents, etc), the palaces (if you don't mind a bit of a train ride, then hampton court palace in west London is great), the river... While the term 'legend' is used all too readily these days, Ray Charles certainly fits the bill for me - I don't think that it was unexpected but still sad to hear that he has passed away[^] none the less. I don't wish to rain on your parade but if it is medical, maybe your first port of call should be an insurance broker to sort out some indemnity insurance and a solicitor to sort out the legal bits such as the EULA. "I'm not a lawyer" but a chat with one could save you the long run - Business Link[^] should be able to put you in touch with someone who can help. Richard Stringer wrote: It is really sad that I didn't care about those kinda things when he was alive to ask. It is being recognised more and more that war recollections skip a generation i.e. they go from grandfather to grandson, rather than father to son. I can't tell you why that is, maybe it is just too close to home, but I do know that you are not alone in this. Barry Lapthorn wrote: If you have any relations that fought in WWII, you should shake their hands now and thank them, as very soon, you'll no longer have the chance. In the UK there was some controversy about the Welsh First minister not going to France in favour of attending a golf dinner. I personally felt that he should have been made to stand in front of a veteran and explain why their sacrifice was not as important as a little white ball... True, but you can span databases across multiple disks, adding new ones as you need. We have used it in production environments since it was released and have had a great experience. Our hospital had the same policy at the early scans but they would tell you at a later scan (i.e. after the point where the baby couldn't be terminated). At the end of the day we didn't find out 'til our son was born, by which point (like most parents, I guess) I was just glad that he was there and all OK :-D "If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?" - Albert Einstein

  • Smacking Children
    M Matt Bishop

I think that the fact that the Scottish parliament had to drop similar legislation means that this has little chance of happening here either. My personal take is that abuse of any form is already covered by law but that smacking is an important tool in keeping my child safe. The problem is that in the UK we have this attitude that says that we can't be critical of others parenting skills (part of the post-modern "if it works for you" ethos) and as a result we fail to step in when parents, even those we may know well, go from discipline to abusing their children for fear of "sticking our nose in". We need to be able to accept the assistance of our peers in order to be better parents - parenting isn't all genetic, you know :) If we were encouraging each other to be better parents then things like this become a non-issue. For example, when we see some dad hitting a child round the head in a supermarket, what do we do about it...? • What's ur favourite beer? what about the worst?
    M Matt Bishop

Duvel is a fantastic beer - especially as they are considerate enough to sell it large bottles (75 cl, I think, about the same as a wine bottle with about the same alcohol content) :) Belgium has got to be Europe's best kept secret - fantastic cities (Brugge, for example) and probably the best beer anywhere... Worst: anything with "Ice" in the name... "If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?" - Albert Einstein

  • Wind instrument preferences.
    M Matt Bishop

Ryan Binns wrote: Probably the easiest wind instrument to play/learn is a saxophone Yep, I have an alto and a soprano and it really is an easy instrument to pick up. You also have the added advantage that it has the same fingering as the flute. I started on the clarinet but this has absolutely no credability when you are a teenager, believe me. Try renting an instrument (quite common for children learning in the UK) for a few months - you can always give it back and try something else.
