    A google search on this topic returns mostly academic papers. Binary algebra is something my school covered at a fairly young age. It's the glue of our digital world. Will quantum computing change how we (especially people in IT) do our stuff? Or will it be abstracted out of sight and simply mean our code will now be executed wicked-fast? If Google is to be believed, quantum computing is close and it's about to change... EVERYTHING. Good read, enjoy: Google's Quantum Processor May Achieve Quantum Supremacy in Months[^]

    Been there, work is not getting done fast enough, so they add more developers, juniors at that. Though I don't mind taking-on and onboarding new people, it had the opposite effect and made the team even less productive in the short run.

    Because the public social media domain is the perfect place for this kind of information. Now everyone will know. Wonder if these will work for grandpa? They probably chose twitter just to be able to call it "tweetpee". WhatsappPee just doesn't sound all that marketable.

  • Technical vs non-technical IT managers

    As a technical person, do you prefer to report to a technical or non-technical manager? I have had good and bad experiences with both. On the up, I appreciate the freedom and trust extended by good non-technical managers, as well as the guidance from good technical managers. On the down, some non-technical managers try too hard to be involved in the detail and often make bad calls based on their insufficient understanding of a problem or situation. I found that technical managers, on the other hand, can be very authoritarian, really just giving commands, these are often the ones who have the highest staff turnover (among coders) as well. From my experience, I prefer reporting to non-technical managers. I found that the technical know-how and guidance I used to seek from technical seniors is mostly available from any diverse group of peers and juniors, each with unique interests and strengths. Whichever you prefer, I'd like to share this snippet: SARS gives clarity on e-filing collapse - YouTube[^] (forwarded to the best part) ...and ask for a moment of silence for the IT people who work for this company. From the following sentence, applying your (hopefully) expert knowledge of the English language what is your understanding... A master budget is part of an overall organization plan for the next year made up of three components: (1) the organization goals, (2) the strategic long-range profit plan, and (3) the tactical short-range profit plan. Now, without applying your knowledge of the subject domain, is it your understanding that the master budget or the organization plan has three components? (pick one) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE: The statement above was extracted from a textbook. (I'll not name the publisher, but it's a large one) I got the following question in a paper: True or False? A master budget consists of (a) organizational goals, (b) strategic long-range profit plan, and (c) tactical short-range profit plan. My (incorrect) answer was True. Reason quoted[^]: "The master budget is the tactical short-range profit plan. These three are part of an overall organization plan."

    Thanks for the advice, I did as you suggested and it actually worked. I will now have an offer in hand before any of my references receive calls. Officially totally worth the risk posting it here!

    The problem is HR and the department I'll be working for operate totally independent, HR have these rigid policies and processes. This makes me reconsider if I really want to work for a big corporate.

    They basically told me that they have to follow up all my references before they can make me an offer.

    The Lounge career question

  • Career.ChangeCompany("NewCompany");
    M MatthysDT

    I recently went for an interview with a very large corporation, I got the job and they handed the process over to HR. HR, requires me to give up references (including my current employer details) as part of the process. BUT this is part of their process that takes place BEFORE an offer is even made! I know they are attempting to negate all possible risk, but in the process they are exposing me to significant risk, leaving me with no room to back away cleanly. If I give them my references, they will be calling up my employer, basically letting the cat out of the bag that I'm going for interviews, and all of this even before tabling a formal offer. So what happens if I decide to reject the offer? It will have completely soured the milk at my current job, especially given the facts that it's a small company and I've worked here for AGES. I'm feeling like: try { Career.ChangeCompany("NewCompany"); } catch(Exception ex) { //ROFL, no point in catching this one buddy, you're screwed either way. throw ex; } I've not been in the job market for many years, has this become standard HR practice?

    Personally, I didn't trust that roll-back feature and would strongly suggest you make a disk image ( Clonezilla[^] ) before upgrading if you want to be certain that the rollback is 100% effective.

    I think the coder is the one who wants to switch in this case, and the IDE's compatibility is the primary concern. That client doesn't particularly sound like the sort of person who's likely to have ever ventured beyond windows XP. :-)

    I know you want info on VB5 specifically, but have you just tried installing it? (Or perhaps copy an installed directory from another older PC) I had VB6 installed on Win8.1 and after the upgrade to 10 it still works like a charm, had no problems. Screenshot[^]
