  • Is it just me, or are...

I'm a software developer. Everything runs in Docker, plus I need at least 1 VM (at once) to connect to customers systems. That, plus Eclipse running, I can easily eat through 32Gb+, and on a 32Gb machine, that just causes swapping and terrible performance. Right now, with Chrome, Docker, VMWare and Eclipse running. I'm at 63% of 64Gb. There's still no way I'd pay 6k. I've got an HPZbook, 6 core/12 thread i7, 64Gb RAM (comes with 32Gb, added an extra 32Gb), 1Tb + 2Tb NVMe (added the 2Tb), and was (from memory) circa £1600. Only got an Nvidia Quadro, so about the same performance as a GTX1650. Happily plays Far Cry 6 on medium.

  • Is Windows 11 ready to be used?
    M Member 2709101

This is all an "In my Opinion". Take it with a pinch of salt. I didn't like it. The new explorer context menu might look nice, but 95% of the options that I (as a developer) use are hidden behind the "show extras" link (or whatever it was called). This means that most of the time I use the file explorer, everything I do with it requires an extra click. It's incompatible with VMWare Workstation. I extensively use VMs on a day to day basis. The only way of getting it to work is to back off the number of cores to 1. All of my VMs use Chrome. Has anyone tried using Chrome on a single core? It's not pretty! The "fix" is to pay for an upgrade to VMWare. At this point, I rolled back to Windows 10, and I'm not intending to upgrade, until they fix at least those issues.

  • WTAF is going on with my laptop and mouse!!!!!!!! (Win10)
    M Member 2709101

Check your middle button functionality. This is exactly what mine does. If I press the middle button (which is easy to do if I'm scrolling too vigorously), it changes behaviour into some kind of scroll mode. The icon changes to a cross with arrows on each end, and moving the mouse causes the page to scroll, rather than move the pointer. HTH

  • Programming Fiction?
    M Member 2709101

If I'm in the mood, I reach for some Neal Stephenson, so that's a very good start. Not specifically programming as such, but very engineering/tech based. Snow Crash (below) is described as "like many of Stephenson's novels, it covers history, linguistics, anthropology, archaeology, religion, computer science, politics, cryptography, memetics and philosophy." My personal favourites: * Interface * Diamond Age * Cryptonomicon * Snow Crash
