  • Lights on your PC, love or hate them?
    O oPhoenixo

Love/hate - I do wonder why you just don't turn them all off though rather than eat the cost? I favored noctua for noise reduction, so I don't have too many lights from the start, although I wish I had the option to go full GAMERZ MODE, I have plenty of lights on some of my side gear but I mostly run dark except for the keyboard, mouse and one non-los lamp. I sometimes feel like any more lights are cheezy but I also like the aesthetic of some of the more ridiculous streamer setups. to each their own.

  • "Lone Wolf" Developer and Your Story?
    O oPhoenixo

Random- my birthday is Oct 11th :p I'm a lonewolf at my dayjob, although I'm college educated (in theory, I learned on my own time as my goal was to be a game developer). I have a love hate with the solo thing, since ultimately on my side job I want a team eventually and the irony of that is I will lean heavily on the team I'm leading for their experience working in teams. That or it will just be a terribly informal process. For this reason I've occasionally sought out things like Game Jams and stuff (there's one in a week btw) to get with others. I wish things like source control and style had been discussed more in school, project planning was woefully inadequate. I've personally made a effort to learn more of the 'mundane' and less syntax in more recent years.

  • Contouring problem using pixel shader
    O oPhoenixo

Hum. My shader knowledge is limited but if anything I thought it'd be higher (I seem to recall some modern cards being able to do 64bit floats). You possibly have to turn it on (or off) since working with fixed points is inherently faster. For this application I sense that speed is not your issue. Immediately I see- http://www.opengl.org/discussion_boards/showthread.php/170053-Shader-floating-point-precision [^] And http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4414041/what-is-the-precision-of-highp-floats-in-glsl-es-2-0-for-iphone-ipod-touch-ipad[^] as being relevant. (There should be a corally in directx as well). Hope this helps.

  • Pulling data from interface
    O oPhoenixo

Not especially no... for one Javascript still isn't as 'native' to me as a language. I imagine I'd have to learn some jquery to handle any of the database pulled information? using javascript would at least get away from the parsing due to the weak typing though eh?

    ASP.NET question

  • Pulling data from interface
    O oPhoenixo

Is there a cleaner way to pull a lot of data from a form for calculations? I feel like I have a lotta ugly tryparse stuff going on. Do people just pull it in one go? I have like 40 controls a user can change (trust me, it can't be helped) and on recalc its a lot of pull, calculate, put back. Seems horribly messy.

  • Antivirus
    O oPhoenixo

I'm in the camp that believes its possible to get malware- it's the only explanation for how I and my family members got a virus. I'm really picky where I download from, and where on the interwebs I browse usually, but occassionally I've been to the shady sides of the net. I think a lot of it can be stopped by not logging in as admin as I stubbornly did for a long time. My daughter used to have a lower access account, within a few months of giving her admin access she got some sort of malware (I'm lumping them together). If you're not logged in as admin you may have benefited from this layer of protection.

    O oPhoenixo

    I've done this for ONE specific... case... now I wonder if there's a better way or if given the context it would be considered excusable. A file or a database call, I don't remember which that can fail via exception. Thing is, I believe the defaults were suitable, I was just checking the db/file for more correct values. That may not be exactly it (I really don't remember...) and if I left it empty I'd think comments explaining WHY would be neccessary. The rest of these comments are making me feel a lot better about my file and function length ^_^;;

    The Lounge question career

  • On English and programming.
    O oPhoenixo

My question becomes, is there a problem with a 'trade language'? English seems to be the de-facto trade language... the universal constant. It certainly may not be the best choice, but I've read that in some cases, even Chinese or Indian groups will speak to their countrymen in English due to dialect/regional language differences. Perhaps in most cases that is isolation- I wouldn't expect an Iowa farmer to speak French any more than I would a French farmer to speak Iowa'n. (Okay that wasn't funny, just smile anyway.) I'm biased because I happened to have English as a first language, but I'd like to think if all else was equal but Spanish was the trade language, I'd learn it. Last note- I'll never get if the 'jokes' about American mono-languageism (which actually seems to be a trait of all primary English speaking countries...) is a joke or a serious jibe. Why bother learning another language and which one would YOU learn? It's unrealistic to pick up a language for a vacation... although if I planned to spend some time there I'd pick up the local language as best I could.
