Finally figured out why C++ is losing the battle with C#Not true. C# is for people who don't know how to develop software just like VB was. It's popular for the same resons, too: lack of skill and management push to lower the cost. It also lowers the quality but quality is not important nowadays anyway. People accept a lot of substandard goods and software if it's cheaper, like things made in China that break after the first usage or outsorced software that doesn't quite work. It's a part of global process of un-developing civilization but that is a topic for a whole new discussion. Just think about that: In the 60s they could send a manned mission to the Moon and back in less than a decade. Now the plan is to do the same in about 20. Some progress, huh?

VC++2005 bites the big oneChristian Graus wrote:
My question is, what do people who don't know how to wire that stuff up by hand do ?
What do you mean? They just leave On32775 in there and move on to the next task. I think it's called "increased productivity"... ;P

Creators of VS 2005, you're doing a heck of a job! When you drag and drop the project file onto the VS.NET (2002,2003 and now 2005), you get a message: Project files cannot be dropped onto Visual Studio. They must be opened via the File menu. Does anybody else think this is stupid? Why giving me a shitty message box instead of just opening the darn file? WTF!?

HiroshimaNot only that, they actually "preserved" the cities designated for nuclear strikes (Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Kokura) and didn't bomb these with conventional weapons. If they did carpet-bomb the place before dropping the nuclear bomb the devastation would not be so obvious since the carpet bombing can do pretty much the same damage. For a long time there were a overflights over the cities by a single american bomber just so the anti aircraft units would get used to it and ignore it. That helped to deliver the real bomb. One of many deception tactics used in the war.

HiroshimaI don't think it's approriate to bring the memorial day on the website dedicated to programming. But once it happened you have to be preparet for various opinions and points of view. And some uncofortable facts may come to the light in the process. Nuclear weapons will be used again, it's just a matter of when not if. We have Israel and possibly Norht Korea soon to be followed by Iran. We have India and Pakistan and here it's really just a matter of time given the close proximity of both countries not allowing any time to properly verify the other side intentions. And then we have terrorists who will use the weapons as soon as they manage to get any (and considering the shape of Russian nuclear forces it's surprising that still didn't happen).

HiroshimaThere is no problem with my form. Just pointing out a few details and putting the whole thing into perspective. And unlike Japanese society I have no reason to feel ashamed. Japan is actively circumventing the history and denying many of the atrocities. Japanese people don't feel sorry for the war crimes, they don't apologize and don't pay compensation to the affected people. Many of the war criminals are considered a heroes and never stands trial. And to top all that they manage to portray themself as a victims where in fact they are directly responsible for all that happened. THAT is what I call a very bad form and I feel obliged to bring the bigger picture out as neccessary.
-
HiroshimaRight on. It's important to remember not only what happened but also why it happened. And in that particular case it's very much relevant because if you just focus on the isolated event you will completely loose the perspective and the propotion of the whole event.

HiroshimaIf it were not for atomic bomb many more millions would day if the invasion took place. My wild guess (judging by the experiences of the Okinawa and Ivo Jima) would be about a million of US soldiers and perhaps up to 10 millions of Japanese during some year long fighting. And kid yourself not - Japanese army and general public was preparing for just that.
-
HiroshimaJudging from your name calling and knee-jerk reactions you don't really know what the cultural discussion is. It's interesting how you have exposed yourself in the process for what you really are.
-
HiroshimaPeople died on both sides. However only one side was inncocent - the other side was an agressor who started the whole thing and can't expect to be considered a victim.
-
HiroshimaIt sure is controversial. I don't want to drill into that or troll here. I am not looking for fight either. This thread should not have been started here at all and so you can invite the person who started it to go to the soapbox to express their opinions. I am just bringing a little balance to the discussion because somebody had to do that.
-
HiroshimaI think Japan gave a clear sample of what to expect on Ivo Jima and Okinawa. I don't think there would be unconditional surrender and any other surrender would simply allow Japanese empire to be rebuild and the whole thing may have started all other again. On the other hand I don't quite get why people get so upset with the use of atomic weapon. The conventional carpet bombing could bring almost the same amount of devastation expect many pople would die a horrible deaths in firestorms as opposed to be vaporised instantly. At mere 20kTNT atomic bomb would not have been effective against many military targets and it was more of a psychological effect that worked here.
-
HiroshimaSorry but no. This thread started here and it can end here. I am sick of twisting the history and making Japan a victim where it's obvious they were agressors and I have no reason to go to soapbox - no names calling will come from me here just the facts and carefully stated opinions.
-
HiroshimaAll of them. Japan started and conducted a horrible, total war in Asia. Japanese were not victims - they were agressors. They raped, killed and tortured millions across the continent. There are no civilians in total war.
-
HiroshimaFacts pointing actually. Don't like when people portray Japanese as victims in the war they started and during which they commited incredible amount of war crimes for which they don't even apologize of feel sorry about.
-
HiroshimaI am sorry but Japan was a country waging a total war against civilians all around Asia at the time. There are actually no civilians in total war. It's TOTAL. The whole country is serving a military and all and every people of a given country are de-facto soldiers in one way or another. No victims and no civilians died in Hiroshima from atomic blast because there were none in Japan at the time. Japanese still don't think they did anything wrong at the time. They still have the emperor around and most of the military responsible for the atrocities consider themselfs as heroes. That kinda proves my point really.
