If your father in law is Polish, then your wife is also Polish, at least in origins. Does she also think she has "the extreme misfortune of being Polish" ? Maybe some other guys here have the extreme misfortune of being: a. asian b. black c. australian d. etc. ? And going back to the beauracracy thing. Beauracracy is the same, all around the world. I am pretty sure that you could easily find out of similar or even worse situations that took place in more civilised and modern countries than mine.
