I think you cannot do it in server. Whether Main and Detail page url has any pattern. If it has then use it to check whether its detail or mail page and work with that. Else, i think HttpRequest.UrlReferrer cannot be set null from Server. Well, I found a way out - I don't know if it's good programming practice, but it works. I simply declared MyPowerfulControl as an abstract class, and it automagically disappeared from my toolbox. Indeed, I solved the issue with a "dirty trick": after I've populated the DataTable, I check the last row and erase it if it's blank (I do not need to check them all, because the excel files they give me never have blank lines in between, apart from the last one - and that was actually causing the problem amongst my program's users) Thanks again! The random number approach is a failure: since the page seems to reload the control after the loggingin procedure, I cannot have a unique identifier for each login attempt, beside the page session. You can set the order of DataGridView Columns using the DisplayIndex property. DataGridViewName.Columns("ColumnName").DisplayIndex = X

thanks for your fast reply! i tried solution no. 1 but this application takes no parameters. so i tried solution no. 2 but i noticed the "keystroke" is sent to my form, not to the external application; i think it's because my form is seen as the active application, not the external executable. i'd like to try solution no. 3 but i don't really know how to do it. i know i may sound annoying but can you give me a hint on using this Win32API stuff? i wish i knew more about programming but you know italian universities... thanks alot, Rey9999
