  • Edge and Creator's Update

It look like the same behaviour for me. But maybe there's some other gesture that does it that I'm not aware of. I'm happy to try stuff out if you have any ideas! Rich.

  • Command prompt on Windows 10 Creators update
    R Richard Lund

Mine doesn't. I installed the Creators Update yesterday and my right-click menu still has the "Command Prompt" and "Command Prompt (Admin)" the same as before. Maybe it's different for a fresh install versus an upgrade? Rich.

    Which OS are you using?

Windows 8 professional 64-bit. The SATA setting in the BIOS is set to AHCI. I also had a quick look to make sure that the SSD was plugged into the 6GBps motherboard connector instead of one of the slower speed ones, and that's ok too. PC Speed HD benchmarker says that it can read the SSD at 520MB/Sec, which is the maximum according to the manufacturer's website. My spinning drive can read at 184MB/Sec which seems pretty good. For timings, discounting the time spent showing the BIOS start screen (seems unfair to blame Windows for that) I have about a 20-25 second wait showing the blue window and the spinning lights, then about another 10 seconds saying "Welcome" after I've logged in. The latter time will be a lot lower if I wait a while before logging in - I assume it's starting services at this point. So it's not slow, but not quite what I was expecting given how everyone else raves about SSD performance; and how quick the Surface Pro is in comparison. Rich.

Thanks for your reply - though I was really hoping for a "yes, flip this toggle and stand back." :) I've definitely not got much in the way of junk installed. I know that Kaspersky has some impact on startup, but in the past it was never particularly onerous, and I've disabled a lot of other startup items. The BIOS and SSD drivers are all current. It's just a little annoying to have this monster PC take four times longer than my Surface Pro to start up - that's about 6 or 7 seconds from cold boot to the desktop. In fact I can boot the Surface, login and check Code Project, and shut it down again before the new PC has even got to the login screen! I shall live with it as a continuing good excuse to wander off and do something else while it's starting. :java: Rich.

As Dave mentioned ensure that there is an SSD as the OS drive - it is the one thing that will make the biggest difference in boot time

I just got a new PC built for me a couple of weeks ago (and would definitely recommend Chillblast[^] for this) which has an SSD as its primary drive. But I don't see anything particularly impressive in terms of boot time - if anything, it may be slightly slower to start than the six-year-old HD-based PC that it replaced. Is there some setting I'm missing? I've noticed that hibernate is not enabled, and therefore the hybrid "fast" boot is also not enabled, but I put that down to some of the scare stories I've read about this massively increasing usage (and consequently reducing time to failure) of the SSD. Should I just stop being a wuss and turn it all on? Rich.

Thank you for this - I hadn't considered it in terms of percentages. That's my favourite number so far! :) Sadly I did, however, know that it was a lose-lose. :( Rich.

No union, sadly. The company are currently going through the "consultation" phase, but it's taken as read that this just means "we've given you notice: get used to it". Rich.

Thanks - something else to look forward to! Plus there was the stuff I didn't mention - like that the existing scheme is a final salary one, and the new one isn't. I know it's all going to hurt - I was just trying to put a base figure on how much. I figure that I can't really beat anyone up over potential future performance of bonds/stocks/etc, but I can complain about an 8% (or 12% or 16%) pay cut and ask for appropriate compensation in my salary. Thanks for your reply! This would be true if I hadn't worded my question badly. It's more of an "if I pay in 4 pounds, they'll pay in 26" arrangement rather than that I have the option to pay in as much as I like. I'll go edit the original post... :(

  • Basic maths help please!

Before I start, I should say that this isn't for my homework! I know how that would go down... :) My workplace is looking to "harmonise" some of the benefits that it offers its staff. Definitely not cost-cutting - please try to remember this! Currently, if I pay 4 pounds into my work pension, the company pay in 26, which is nice. Under the new arrangements, if I pay in 8 pounds, they'll pay in 18. This might be good too, so I don't want to sound too ungrateful - I just want to work out how much worse off I'll be with the new arrangement. [ I edited the above to try to make it a bit clearer. Really this is using percentages, but I figured it was easier to explain it this way, then got it wrong... ] I can see two ways to calculate this; they come up with different numbers, and I can't figure out what I've done wrong. It all seems so simple, and I don't like feeling stupid! Option 1: I will have to pay 4 pounds more, and they'll pay me 8 pounds less. Therefore I'm 12 pounds worse off. Option 2: My total pension will fall from 30 to 26 pounds, and this will cost me 4 pounds more. Therefore I'm 8 pounds worse off. Please could someone tell me which of these is correct, and why? It's driving me mad! Thanks for your time, and thanks very much in advance for any help. Rich.

  • Web Parts Personalization Reset problem
    R Richard Lund

Hi all, I've got a problem using Web Parts in ASP.NET 2.0 - and I'd really appreciate some assistance. Everything works fine until we make a change that causes the site to be recompiled - either by putting an updated file in App_Code or by making a change to the root web.config file. Once either of those actions is done, some users (more than one, but certainly not all of them) report that any personalization that they have made to their page gets lost. This is understandably proving annoying to my users. I have a test page on a separate test server/personalization database, and I can muck about changing every file on the site but still can't reproduce the problem for myself. But I have seen it happen on the live box, so I know they're not lying to me ;) The only thing that's non-standard about the server configuration is that my live environment comprises two separate IIS servers using round-robin DNS as a crude load-balancer, and both servers reading/writing the same personalization database. This doesn't seem to give any problems (except maybe for this one!), but I mention it because it's the one thing that makes me a little nervous about this setup. Thanks in advance for any help or advice that anyone can offer. Rich.

No, I expected it to be terrible, and wasn't disappointed! I did enjoy the race bits near the start, where they must have been driving cars with a whole lot of gears - they definitely changed up at least 30 times in those sequences. The need to change down to accelerate on a long straight also seems a little odd to me. Rich.
