But even for legally skilled people the rules set out in this directive are far from being clear or unambiguous. And the main reason why they will mess it up again is that EC tries to extend rules to the internet which were initially developed for the telecommunications industry. Sascha

The ultimate act of idiocy? Or protection of privacy? -
The ultimate act of idiocy? Or protection of privacy?I guess it is just much ado about nothing. The article on idg.net reports on the Amendment 26 of the
Second Report on the proposal for a European Parliament and Council directive concerning the processing of personal data and the protection of privacy in the electronic communications sector.
The regulation in question reads as follows: 2a. Member States shall prohibit the use of electronic communications networks to store information or to gain access to information stored in the terminal equipment of a subscriber or user without the prior, explicit consent of the subscriber or user concerned. This shall not prevent any technical storage or access for the sole purpose of carrying out or facilitating the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network. This regulation does not cover cookies used for purposes of session management ("technical storage or..."). Reading the second sentence carefully, I come to the conclusion that enabling cookies in your browser can be treated as 'explicit consent' to the usage of cookies. So, for most of the Member States of the EC this directive would not change anything. Sascha -
Help with Networking CodeIf you want to use winsock have a look at the GlobChat sample that comes with the Platform SDK (can also be found at MSDN).
It's a multiprotocol chat server that shows how to set up the basic structure of a winsock client/server application. -
OO versus component design/architecture> I'm looking for information comparing contrasting OO design and COM component design? Cetus links could be a good starting point for this kind of information. They have over 18,000 links on objects & components. Sascha
