You guys really don't know how lucky you all are. Here in Portugal everyone expects people in the IT field to always work extra time and of course, paid overtime is a mirage. I have never heard of anyone here being paid overtime. Companies assume you will be putting on lots of non-paid overtime. Last project I was in, I was arriving at 9:30am-10:30am and would leave work around 1:00am-2:30am, except on fridays. Friday it was normal for the team to leave at 4:00am-6:00am. That's right. 15 to 17 hours always. Sounds like a lie but it isn't. So I understand when some of my friends from other countries say Portugal is a 3rd world country that hasn't abolish slavery. And we don't even earn that good. That's why most people are leaving to other places. Don't want to sound like winning but there is a reason people say you can't hold on to a girl working in the IT industry. And just to end the story, after 10 months I choose to quit because they said I could not take the holidays I had the right to take. Found another job. Maybe it will be this time I will only work 8 hours a day... (crosses fingers) Kind regards.
