Forever. Well actually until either the SQL Server terminates it or a network problem occurs. A default configuration of SQL Server will never expire a connection, but some configurations will. That's my experience with it anyway.

The answer to both of the above depends on the table design. If the table has a defined primary key, then you could do 1) as select top 4 * from mytable order by mykey ASC/DESC (whether you need ASCending or Descending depends on how you defined the key...) how to get a range (2) is more challenging if the table contains an identity field (need not be part of the primary key), and records in the table never get deleted, you could use the identity as record index: select * from mytable where myindex > 8 and myindex < 16 otherwise, you would need something cumbersome like: select top 6 * from mytable where myidentity not in (select top 8 myidenty from mytable) if there is no identity field, then the notion of nth record is possibly arbitrary and variable over time...

Ask yourself; when is the last time one of these research firms was right?

What about converting to .pdf or .ps? I think there are some utilities to convert it in codeproject. Another solution would be to generate an image. For that, i think you can create an image object of some kind, like CBitmap (or CMemDC??), and PAINT in to it, like you would do if it was a printer. Of course, if your doc has multiple pages, it will require multiple images. After that, you can save the data to a file.

This is a huge problem with .NET If you're a small company and generally don't distribute your apps on CD, .NET is severly limiting your potential market. I've managed to compile C++ 6.0 using Studio.NET and the final exe does not require the 22MB framework but I have been unsuccessful with VB.net I agree that EVENTUALLY, everyone will have the framework installed, but untill then, would you download a 22.1MB application or a 100Kb application? When notifying a person, the check granularity is not so fine as to preclude simply running a program that connects to the POP server and queries for the UIDLs, sending notification when new email is found. This is nice because it can be used on your machine if you can get email from there at all-- it doesn't depend upon many particulars. Just check every few minutes or so right?

You can add events by going to the class view and selecting the class you would like to add the message handlers to. Underneath the class view there is a properties box with a button with a lightning picture. Click on that picture and you will see a list of events you can add to the class. I think most of the features in VC 6.0 is still in VS.Net just re-arranged to different locations. - Anatari

"Sending mail directly" means talking to the recipient's SMTP server, so there's no way around the SMTP protocol.
