Then you should try out the ReSharper EAP from JetBrains - IntelliJ IDEA stuff for VS.NET. It's a big buggy at the moment - first release alpha style stuff - but looks promising: http://www.jetbrains.net/resharper/[^] -- Simon Steele Programmers Notepad - http://www.pnotepad.org/

  • Don't even think of buying a Celeron.
    S Simon Steele

The problem with AMDs is the noise. I bought a 2Ghz Athlon for my current home PC and any reasonable fan for cooling it is a monster. They all sound like local whirlwinds. Change to a P4 and they run much cooler so the fans are a lot quieter. Depends on how much you value your ambient noise level but my next chip will be an intel. • iTunes for Windows is out
    S Simon Steele

Wee-haa. Been waiting ages for this. Let's hope it's ok. It appears I can't buy anything from their store but I'm not too worried about that. I'm more interested in seeing how it plays with my iPod. I used to use XPlay from mediafour.com[^] which was quite good, but have been trying Anapod (http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/[^]) which given their notmad software should have been really good. Unfortunately so far it's been really buggy. Bit of a waste of $15 dollars. I'll give them a chance though, and see if they come good. I'm heading out to the PDC at the end of the month and planning on upgrading from my 10Gb mark-II iPod to a new 40Gb mark-III. • MDI Frame Title
    S Simon Steele

Hi, I have an MDI application, and the window title is shown as title - [filename] when a child is maximised. I want to be able to change this display to look like: filename - title MFC does this, but I can't seem to find how to do it in plain WinAPI or WTL. • Process vs. Thread priority.
    S Simon Steele

If I have two processes with normal priority, and each has a thread running with different priorities like this: Process 1 |- Thread 1 (High Priority) Process 2 |- Thread 2 (Normal Priority) I'm trying to work out whether the high priority on the thread affects only the thread's chances of getting a slice within the context of slices available for the process, or whether it affects the allocation of slices at the same level as process priority. That's not hugely clear, I know. Given this scenario, will Thread 1 get more time on the processor than Thread 2 (even though the processes have equal priority)? Any ideas? Thanks. -- Simon Steele Programmers Notepad - http://www.pnotepad.org/

Argh! I hope they re-issue it or I'm stuffed - an almost complete collection is useless! Of course the original with Sam Neill (or whoever) would be worth more... *sigh* At least Die Another Day seems to have a reversable cover so that it fits with the collection - I was worried at first that they'd done something stupid. -- Simon Steele Programmers Notepad - http://www.pnotepad.org/

  • What's the best James Bond movie?
    S Simon Steele

I just watched You Only Live Twice (once of the connery ones) the other day when I was bored - really enjoyed it. I now have all bar one of the DVDs in the collectable set - I can't seem to find Living Daylights in the shops anywhere. No prizes available for guessing why that's the only one I haven't bought yet. I have to be controversial though and say that one of my absolute favorites is tomorrow never dies - fantastic film. For me, brosnan is the second bond (connery of course being first!). The most recent film (Die Another Day, just released on DVD) is probably best in terms of bang for your bucks, but it has an absolutely awful CG scene in it which ruined the first watch for me. Second time round I expected it so the rest of the film shined much better. It also has the worst bond theme (and cameo) ever - madonna should be ashamed. just my most humble of opinions. -- Simon Steele Programmers Notepad - http://www.pnotepad.org/

  • I hate __int64!
    S Simon Steele

Hi, thanks for saying that it works for you, it led me to the problem. The value being passed in was actually a long not an unsigned long, I didn't notice because it's actually part of a structure the definition of which has changed. "it does work, you fool!" posts are just as useful as solution advice so thanks to those who replied. I'll write a test harness next time before posting, my bad :) thanks again, simon. -- Simon Steele Programmers Notepad - http://www.pnotepad.org/

    C / C++ / MFC help question

  • I hate __int64!
    S Simon Steele

Hi, I'm having a frustrating little problem with 64-bit integer arithmetic. It goes something like this: 0xba5da800 * 0x38E which should equal: 0x29678EB3000 Unfortunately, the code is a bit like this: #define unsigned __int64 uint64_t unsigned long myval = 0xba5e3500; uint64_t myfunction(unsigned long val) { return val * 1000; } This doesn't work, nor does: return ((uint64_t)val * (uint64_t)1000); or return (uint64_t)((uint64_t)val * (uint64_t)1000); The value I get returned looks like: 0xfffffeefffff0800 (or similar) Now, I've run into problems before with not casting everything into __int64 twice (ok I exadurate slightly) for every calculation - but this is weird. It seems that casting val to uint64_t is turning it into: 0xffffffffba5e3500 Why is this happening?! I truly do hate __int64, any help would be appreciated. thanks, Simon -- Simon Steele Programmers Notepad - http://www.pnotepad.org/

  • Open source and my rights...
    S Simon Steele

I ought to clarify that I don't really want to make money from it myself. I just found the idea of others capitalising on my work to be a bit of a hurdle. I believe that you are most probably right, and that it's just a bit of a shock to the system to face this kind of issue. -- Simon Steele Programmers Notepad - http://www.pnotepad.org/

I think this kind of thing perhaps makes the most sense and is part of what I was (I guess) originally trying to achieve with this work. The comments of others on GPL etc. have been particularly useful. Ultimately, with open source, it seems that people can profit from your work - whether honestly or not. My response to those who believe that I should stop moaning and let others use my work for free is to suggest to them that they try releasing the source to a major application and see how they feel when someone sells it for their own profit. I think I may simply change the license to one including an attribution clause. That way I remain some kind of credit trail with the work - it cannot be claimed as the work of another party. Thanks for all your comments. -- Simon Steele Programmers Notepad - http://www.pnotepad.org/

  • Open source and my rights...
    S Simon Steele

I made programmers notepad an open source product for a number of reasons. 1. I wanted to give back to the community - I know this sounds lame but I use a lot of free and open source software, and I wanted to contribute something of my own. 2. I don't really want to charge for PN, and I wanted to provide top-class features. With an open source product, others can develop those features and PN can benefit. 3. I'm sure some ego-tastic part of my subconcious was hoping for recognition. :) and probably a few more... Rohit Sinha wrote: For every person who asks for your permission before using it in a commercial app, there will be 10 more who will use it without your permission. Whatever the style of license - GPL, BSD, whatever. That I'm aware of, but somehow it's different if they're doing it illegally. There is at least potential for recourse over the misuse. I think at the time I licensed the code originally, I was having a utopian vision of enormous proportions. Or maybe in a day or two I'll just settle back down and decide that maybe everyone should be able to use the code. It's OK to feel bad about others making money over your hard work, so change the license in your next release IMO. Thanks, I think I probably will, but we'll see. -- Simon Steele Programmers Notepad - http://www.pnotepad.org/
