This was your post: I don't know what dumbass made this decision, but I'd $itch slap him or her into next week and give them a wedgy. So, Microsoft rolls out OS and application updates constantly, and sometime in the past (and I know it's been a while) they decided to change the default save locations to OneDrive. They clearly did not think this through, or maybe they did and it's anal retentive. What software company changes user defaults? Let me re-phrase, what competent software company does this? I get MS wants us to use the cloud so that everything is backed up, but I now have documentation in assorted locations, and I need to figure out the most current. It does not help I'm picking this up after 2 months of downtime. This is up there with the automatic reboots. I swear, I'll punch these people if I ever meet them. My answer addressed the fact that it does not change the default location and that I have several machines that have their own default location. You have to set them first before they become your custom default locations. That sounds to me like dead on what you said. Other people also addressed the same and corrected you. I wish you luck with your understanding of how software works.

This morning on the east coast of the US, and it's a Microsoft rant...Good morning. It does not change your default location if you have ever set it before. If you have never set a default location, then it will change its default location. On my work PC I save locally to my shared drives, on my tiny tablet-PC I save to Onedrive because I have very little space on that tablet. You can change the default save location when you go save a file. I hope this helps with at least the anger. Have a great day!

Gods punish the insolent onesI took me almost 10 years to drop Borland CPP for MS C# and about 30 to drop Unix/Linux for Windows. I hated doing it, as if I were doing something wrong. I kept seeing my friends keeping software running for years but I had to keep making changes. The maintenance was killing me. I now have other problems and the universe I deal with is bigger, but there is always something already solving my problems in the Microsoft universe. My last adventures were the Mono Project and the MySQL limit to 2Gbs. By the time I got around their issues MSFT had CS Code behind and MSSQL Express could store 10GB in the main DB and unlimited using Streams. At my level, which is SMB, that makes it very easy to use. In those short years are grew 4 times the size. I share my shame of leaving Unix/Linux for Windows for that reason. Good luck Sir!

Gods punish the insolent onesI keep hearing all these issues with VMWare and I keep thinking the same thing: What is the need for VMWare? Why pay for something that is free from Microsoft. We support it for third parties that use it for some of our customers, and they have the same issues you mention. Say about 5 VMs Total. They always blame Microsoft, but our stuff just runs. That's the only part that fails. My machine and server count on Hyper-V is on the 500 Plus and with several iterations of servers and for more than 14 years. My Hyper-V Stuff has been running from the time of Virtual PC and old as well as new just run. I even have some virtual DOS 6.22 and XP VMs needed for historical reasons since the software vendors went away. Again, it just runs fine. If it fails, you may want to consider and alternative, if it works, why bother changing? Good luck

What a disasterKiss your money goodbye. I have to tell you that I have hundreds of Azure accounts with more than one subscription, and this is the biggest item I make my techs look at. When you add a Resource, mind what subscription you put it in. You are required to use a CC (unless you are direct bill, CSP), but you should FIRST READ all documentation about it and how to apply your subscription. It allows for you to have benefits from Non-Profits and complete the functionality by paying, direct or CSP1 or CSP2 lowering your cost. At least Azure always had resources and resource groups to lump up your charges and you can add TAGS to do your reconciliation. Not the same with Amazon where they hide items after you remove a resource, and you cannot remove them until you call them and 3 months later you get the charges dropped. Good luck!

Which RDBMS?From what I know, MSSQL exists for Linux also. growing up with Multics, learning UNIX and then Linux for over 25 years, I abandoned that platform completely for Microsoft when I found that my peers had used Microsoft products and they were able to upgrade their solutions as time passed. I had to fight every time with Unix/Linux changes. After 15 years on the Microsoft path I have never looked back and I am going on 40 years of developing software and I can maintain and upgrade applications from even 20 years ago. Having software out there bringing you rent, the better off you are and the more time you have to develop. That learning curve is bad enough with new technology alone, so I advise you to stick with your tools. I wish you luck!

Windows Remote Desktop Connection AlternativeI read your question and I remember that this happened to me, but I could not remember how I fixed it. I went to lunch and voila, I remembered. After I reinstalled both the client machine and the machine I was remoting to, I decided this was not a Windows issue. Trust me, I tried everything I could try. I tested another keyboard on the local machine, and that fixed the problem. Does it make sense, no. Did it work, yes! Good luck!

K&R for C++?There is a series of books called Sams Teach Yourself <_Subject HERE_> in 24 hours. It means 1 hour each day, but you can set your own pace. I have found it very helpful in previous times, from C# to SQL. I searched just now and I found an online version of it. Sams Teach Yourself C++ in 24 Hours: Writing Your First Program[^] Good luck!

Would you work at Twitter now?Yes! Can imagine having a boss that have thought and creates at your same level? Not bound by the normal corporate BS? Not every idea becomes a project and not every project pans out, but when your boss is up at night thinking of what to come up with next, instead of how to please everyone else. Howard Hughes was like that, and because he was unimpeded by the public corporate bounds, his companies were used to run very large important projects. Look up the Glomar Explorer. I would love to be part of projects like what Elon Musk and Howard Hughes have created.

Would you choose C#...I used it to teach programming to an Art Major (female), and to both my boys that have mathematical minds. All 3 are developers now and do very well in several other languages. The result was that they learned well what they should and should not do in programming because it really takes away (C# does) the good-programmer responsibility of not doing stupid stuff like accessing linked lists with modify before addressing the possibility of collisions. Having said that, I think the basis and the simple things need to be learned first, not matter what the language. Beginning with concepts that would allow the student translate their programming logic to any other language is paramount to their formation. My two bits.

DNS : totally stumpedDid you check your host file? c:\windows\system32\drives\etc open your host file from an elevated command prompt and see if you have an entry for your old IP address and your website. I hope that helps and have a Bless Day!
